Miami Dolphins Fire Coach Joe Philbin: A 1-3 start was enough for the Miami Dolphins to decide they've had enough of head coach Joe Philbin. He was fired Monday after going 24-28 since taking over the team in 2012. The team ranks last in the NFL in rushing defense despite signing defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh for six years and $114 million in free agency.
Huzzah! The fact that we're promoting the Tight Ends Coach to interim leadership says a lot. I don't think we can poach anyone from another team during the season, so I don't think this makes the team better, but Philbin was such a beige sack of nothing that in some way, even worse is better.
I was hoping we'd give the job to Lazor, so that when he inevitably tanked, we could hold up signs saying "FIRE THE LAZOR."

I can picture Stephen Ross reading about Matt Williams getting fired and saying to himself, "Hey we have a guy who looks just like that. Why not?"

Did they really Lane Kiffin him overseas?
I got a buck that says Kiffin's his (non-interim) replacement.
Almost said "permanent" there, but ha. No.

Defensive Co-ordinator Kevin Coyle is apparently out the door as well.
With half a secondary and no linebackers the Dolphins' defence is actually pretty terrible, but probably not last-in-the-NFL terrible.

Honestly, I thought Philbin should've been canned after the 2013 season due to the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin flap. Not to mention not making the playoffs during his time there.

Mr. B I think you're right that it will come down to leadership, a steady hand on the tiller, etc. Good news.

I saw Wilson's story yesterday. It doesn't ring true of the Tannehill who shows up in front of the press - I've never picked up a petulant vibe from him - but with this franchise, anything is possible.
After he got turned down for stadium funding I was hoping Ross would move the team to LA so I could sort of give up on them. Probably kidding myself though.

My favourite comment (from yerfatma's link):
It looks like Philbin was able to resolve that issue at practice. Tannehill looked a lot more comfortable getting intercepted during the game.

There was a special commentary moment during the game where Ian Eagle said something like "Another failed third down. They've made that the focus of practice this week."
I mean, I wouldn't be completely surprised.

It's a lot easier to be an asshole with people who you aren't trained to not be an asshole with.

Plus, if the practice squad guys get in Tannehill's face, he's got backup.
The missus never misses.

The Jags darn near handed the Colts a signature loss and are on track to being kings of the Sunshine State this year. Who knew?

If the Tannehill thing is accurate then Donte Stallworth has a nice extra layer to add: Tom Brady used to pay practice squad players who intercepted him.
Meanwhile, some guy from the NFL is complaining about picking on a QB without a character blemish based on second-hand sources, which is chucklesome considering how the NFL spent its off-season.
