Fantasy NFL 2004

ooh, I am SO in on this. Of course, with my luck I'll get Kurt Warner and Ricky Williams if I can't make it on draft day...

Toll Gate High Wins Rhode Island High School Hockey Title

Petey, how many of those years were you on the team, 15 or 20? ;-))) LOL. I wish!! I think in that culture, you pretty much have to be in it from when you're like 6-7 years old. Everyone that I knew on the team was in it for at least that long. I moved to that area when I was already 12 years old, so I missed out on a lot of the soccer/swimming/football/baseball thing. Lacrosse was my thing though since that was getting big when I was in high school.

Not too bad. 'Course my high school won like 40+ straight county boys swimming titles...

Pretty sad because I happened to be going to George Washington (ok, grad school, but it still counts) when Jarvis was here, GW got to the Sweet 16, and Dare was having a pretty big impact to get 'em there. When he decided to go out for the draft, it definitely was too soon though - definitely needed another year or two under his belt. I really hate hearing these stories - I'm about a month away from 35 and, even though I don't have (as far as I know) have any unknown heart abnormalities, these stories of otherwise-healthy 30-year-olds dying really scares the shit out of me.

Mr. Sanders, meet Mr. Douglas. Buster, this is Corrie.

I saw this fight Saturday night. Man, did Sanders kick Wladimir's ass. Personally I'd make the following points: First, Klitschko looked like he went into the ring cold, probably expecting that this would be a total cakewalk. Second, I would bet that this was the first time that Klitschko faced a southpaw. And third, obviously, Klitschko lookes pretty tentative (much like Ruiz last week), whereas Sanders was pretty aggressive. It'll be interesting, to me, to see where Sanders goes after this. There's not many -- if any -- southpaws in the heavyweight mix, and considering some of the power shots he landed on Klitschko, he's an interesting dark horse in the division.

NASCAR Walmart Cup?

Ah, but back when Elliott won the bonus in '85 (then the Winston Million), it was structured differently -- I believe you had to win Daytona, Talladega, and I think the World 600 to get the cash. Sad that I know this, I like Formula 1 much more than NASCAR.

Well, personally I think the Bengals would be good for at least 4 wins next year, if only based on Lewis' defensive smarts. If I was Marv, I'd be trying to grab as much draft power as possible -- probably the only way that they'll get college players that are half decent.

coach the Bengals? Marvin Lewis already got hired for that. Interesting to see how long he lasts there! Any speculation on who gets the job now? Ray Rhodes? Dennis Green?

The FIA has radically changed

Personally I think this A Very Good Thing. Of course, with Prost and Arrows both going under this past year (apparently Arrows is being liquidated as we speak), it seems too little too late, but I think for the long term this may help a lot. I really do wish though that some consideration is brought again to telling engine manufacturers that they must be able to make customer engines widely available (say, enough to supply a factory team plus 2-3 others). I mean, BMW makes engines but only to Williams; why should Jordan and Minardi, for instance, not be able to buy customer engines from BMW? This is why IRL has an advantage thanks to the engine lease policies they have.

Yeesh, that is absolutely ridiculous. I could see the heinous possiblities for something like this in soccer...but YACHTING?!?!? I don't mean for that to besmirch "the beautiful game," but considering the history of soccer hooliganism...

Disastro-Turf

People don't complain much about Giants Stadium, at least not to the point where the facility becomes notorious. I wish I remember where I had seen it, but I dimly recall reading that Giants Stadium has served, in many respects, as a "model" for the construction of later football-only stadiums -- at least in terms of sightlines, fan amenities, team facilites, etc. It only becomes notorious when there's snow and bad football, mind you... ;-)

To get back on-topic...I actually don't think that we can equate ESPN with being "the M$ of sports broadcasting." Especially on cable! I mean, OLN has had full coverage of Tour de France and the America's Cup races; Speed Channel has Formula One and WRC. Throw in Fox Sports Channel, par-per-view of English Premier League, and the local international-oriented public TV station that regularly puts up Aussie football and Irish hurling (!!)....there's lots of choices in my neck of the woods. ESPN would only be the M$ of sports broadcasting if they tied up all these contracts in the US AND overseas. I don't see that happening.

The Boston Expos?

Of course, if they had any brains, they'd move the Expos to DC, but considering who's running baseball right now, the chances are slim to none But also, the cynical bastard in me says that if "it's all about the Benjamins," then they really should move the Expos to New York and make it a three-team town again. The baseball gods know that you can get a whole hell of a lot more cash in NY than Boston.

The NBA institutes instant replay, as expected.

Is this meaningful, or just a response to a hot issue? IMHO...just a response to a hot issue. To me, vito90 hit the nail on the head: "get the calls right." That's all I ask, and if they can do that then maybe I will watch the NBA other than during the finals. It does...give the league a bit more credibility Personally, I don't think the league has any credibility until they get the refs to call games by the book. Unfortunately that would mean a lot of 22-20 games, because they'd be a lot of palming and travelling calls made that haven't been since....oh...Jordan showed up. (IMHO, obviously)

Great link ahhgrr. Of course, LeMond's comeback from almost getting killed in a hunting accident is no small potatoes either, but Lance's recovery from cancer is still, I think, just shocking (just based on the how the cancer progressed).

MLB teams in dire dinero dilemma.

As with most baseball fans, I don't believe 98% of what Selig is saying either. However, I do think that baseball does have serious revenue problems, but it's of their own making from (a) overexpanding; and (b) not allowing teams the freedom of movement that we've seen recently in football, hockey and basketball. I mean, how many people realize the the O's were once the St. Louis Browns, and that the owners of the Senators LET THEM MOVE TO BALTIMORE??? Allow the Expos to move to DC, contract the Marlins and the Devil Rays, and move the Brew Crew back to the AL. Get rid of the DH. To me, that would be the start of a number of moves to save cash overall and get some better competitive balance back. Oh yeah, and hire a new commissioner, but have him paid out of the pockets of both the owners AND the players union. For lack of a better candidate, I immediately nominate myself for the job. :-)

Ferrari, Schumi, and Rubens fined US$1 million for Austrian GP.

The idealistic side of me thinks that a CART/IRL/NASCAR-type rule will come out within a few years that every car must have its own pit, pitcrew (restricted to a specific number of people of course), and pit chief, and this will help stop these shenanigans. The cynical bastard in me, though, know it ain't gonna happen.

Baseball has been using a rather cool technology to help coach their umps.

Personally, I think this would be an excellent training tool for MLB. And maybe it would also help shape up some of the fools they call umps too -- or at least make it easier to fire the more egregiously incompetent ones.

Timeouts In Soccer!?!?

I agree with that. I really have to wonder how much traction Bettman will get amongst the NHL owners to get the 15-second face-off rule implemented, like they have in international hockey. Personally, I don't think it'll happen, the owners really want that ad revenue. I'm starting to think that the only places you see sports played on a much purer level (i.e., no constant interruptions for ads and TV timeouts) are either (a) at the international level or (b) grade school/high school/college sports that 98% of the time aren't on TV.

Schumacher second best driver ever

Personally I think people don't value Fangio's achievements as they should

I definitely agree with that.

I really don't think you can compare Schui and Fangio fairly, just on the basis of different eras and machinery.

That being said, put Schui, Prost, Senna, Fangio, Ascari, Andretti, Mansell, Graham Hill, and Moss in the same F1 machinery....probably Fangio will still kick all their butts into next week (and I say this with a heavy pro-Prost bias).

What I'd REALLY like to see is how you quantify "the greatest driver, PERIOD" across all forms of racing (F1, NASCAR, Indy, sports car).

You have your Petty, Earnhardt, Gordon in NASCAR....Foyt, Andretti, Phil Hill, Moss as guys who succeeded well in multiple forms....Schu, Prost, et al in F1. Geez, my head spins thinking about it.

Personally, when the Yankees win, I give praise to Lucifer (why do ya think the Red Sox continue to have problems?). But seriously...methinks these athletes that think "god" is behind their talent really need to get a clue. I mean, all those hours of practice for half their life means nothing? By that standard, I should be F1 champion, Cy Young and Triple Crown winner, and sweep the Grand Slam all at the same time..all the while eating donuts, cheese fries, and reading SpoFi in my spare time.
