'Roid rage on the 9th tee: - Gary Player said Wednesday he knows of at least one golfer who has used steroids, and he urged golf organizations to move quickly toward a random drug-testing plan .. then he put his fist through the wall and screamed "why is no one listening to me!!"

Are you sure that they are talking about steroids and not hemorrhoids? If so, I thought that John Daly looked different. Either way you slice it.

Someone slipped into Phil Mickelson's locker, took his steriods, and put breast growth hormones in their place.

Hey, Phil lost his moobs last winter, so maybe he is a suspect. And it looks to me like Charles Howell III is up to at least 150 these days.

I'm with Tiger on this one. I don't see many pro golfers using steroids. What is the payoff?Golf is a finesse sport where strength is secondary at best.

This ESPN, is it something one would need a TV or a web browser to see?

"I took an oath prior to him telling me... I also promised I wouldn't tell..." he told ESPN. Does this self-agrandising little prick never stop talking? Can he not go five minutes without being the centre of attention? Want to talk about cheating in golf, Gary? How about you talk us through how you won the Open in '74? I love Ernie Els' respone when someone told him what Player had said: "Holy shit. I know I'm not. But if he knows it, he knows something I don't. There is a list of substances they ban. I take Advil for pains and discomfort and anti-inflammatories and something for my knee when it gets damp, and I take Guinness." Advil and Guinness - the breakfast of champions.

So I went digging around to find how Player did win the '74 Open (any more info JJ?), and got to his Wikipedia page. The whole thing reads as an advertisement for Gary Player's awesomeness. Seems clear to me that his people have been the ones writing/editing it. From his Wikipedia entry:

Legend of the Black Knight A courageous style of play fired by a fiercely competitive nature, an always courteous demeanour and a penchant for black attire on the golf course have given rise to the name by which Gary Player is known throughout the world - The Black Knight. The Black Knight logo identifies all the companies of the Gary Player Group and symbolises the strength of character and fighting spirit that imbues both the man and the Group.
Too funny.

The Black Knight - did not know this about him. Seems an odd nickname for a man once under fire for not speaking out against apartheid. Back to roids in golf. I must agree with sickleguy that their use would seem out of place in golf unless someone is chasing some additional GNC or Weider sponsorship dollars. If somehow Player's worries prove true what's next? Steriods in billiards? Just think how cool it would be to see someone take the cue to the 8 ball with popeye forearms. Awesome to say the least.

I 2nd the request for more info, JJ ... or actually your take on the '74 Open. I've reead a couple blurbs on it, but I bet your perspective will be more enlightening and entertaining. More on topic - regardless of the accuracy of his disclosure, this does seem to be dubious timing by Player. I'm thinking I'd be pretty peeved if I was the R&A.

The Black Knight? Didn't he ever see Monty Python? There was a rumour of scullduggery in 1974. It would seem I've ranted about him before here... and here. I should probably be a bit more cautious with what I write online. If he ever reads that, he'll probably have me up in court for slandering a Knight. My take on 1974 - to tone it down a bit from those previous links - isn't worth a damn. I wasn't even born and all I have to go on are rumours about someone I just don't like. Maybe he did cheat despite having a six shot lead at the time. Maybe his caddie cheated on his behalf without his knowledge. Maybe nothing happened. I just always come back to the same thing with Player. I should like him. We were born in the same country, his record of wins is sensational and his work ethic has always been stunning - he is everything I like in a sports person - but I've never been able to warm to him. As for this roid thing? Load of nonsense, and terrible timing.

The Black Knight - did not know this about him. I believe the name came from his frequent wearing of black clothing on the course. MGD, great shot!!!

Mr. Player is a fitness nut and all natural fitness nuts strongly oppose the intake of steroids. Don't think steroids would be a lot of help in golf. There was another rumor regarding the Black Knight when playing in the first skins game quite awhile back. Something surrounding the removal of a root in the fairway. I believe it was on ABC and they edited out that sequence. Heard about it after the fact and had it on tape but never saw the violation. Many, many a golfer has been involved in a rule infraction whether intentional or, in most cases unknowingly. But I would have to say that 99% or more of Gary Players' career was/is always way above the board. He has always been a fierce competitor and respectful of the competition. He has always seemed to rub many people the wrong way also. I respect him as a golfer. Everyone has a right to their own political beliefs......off the course.

What a great weekend. THE OPEN is wonderful a lot of unusual things happening, great coverage, and the Brits are not all Woods nuts it was nice listening to the announcers finally include the rest of the field of players Tiger is not Golf and without the other players he is nothing, everyone also does not like him and mostly all the other players have a family and have to deal with the headaches of home and being away from family. So lets look for a better excuse for him ok. They all don't get appearence money and big time merchendize deals, they in the most part are toughing it out, as VJ once said Tiger who. Further more with all his records lets see him play a a tournament with a set of clubs like the used to use you know 15 clubs and you were lucky to see any of them match and the woods where made of wood and the ball well thats a whole story in itself and as far as records go the grand slam was made in one season not two players where required to play so many tournaments in one year lets face it, Woods can't be critized because it is politically incorrect Golf will go on with or without him and who gives a dam what the next great player is. Let us all remember what the King has given the sport and his popularity was made of Love, not records,or how far he could hit the ball but how he played th game he took chances and and played with abandon he created shots which players today have copied,The love the fans give him was earned which has not been equaled to any other player from Jones. Snead,Hogan and Nicklaus it's the fan that makes the sport and Palmer brought the fans too the game with him and they have never left
