You've heard of "shanking a kick," but how about "shanking a kicker?": In a move I can only describe as "Tonya Harding-ish," Mitch Cozad, the backup punter for the University of Northern Colorado, stabbed starting punter Rafael Mendoza in his kicking leg. The link above has the straight info, and this one has the snark.

I'm glad Hand found it, but the snarky column in the Greeley paper is in bad taste. A stabbing's a pretty serious crime that could have resulted in life-threatening injuries, and he's treating it like a prank.

Am I the only one getting a 404 for the Greely paper link now?

No you are not, yerfatma, but I did eventually find it here.

rcade:"I'm glad Hand found it, but the snarky column in the Greeley paper is in bad taste. I dunno..., isn't the absurdity of the guy's scheme the whole reason its even being reported in the news at all. I don't think it harms the victim really, just mocks the moron perp.

RyanMorton: congratulations, you've waited since Feb 25 to make that one profound comment.

That rcade is glad-handing again. I don't have a huge issue with the tone ofthe Greely piece. Cozad's idiocy is deserving of a Darwin-Awards-kind of treatment. The fact that Cozad emerged physically unscathed makes the heavy scorn feel that much more necessary. I didn't pick up any real insensitivity to the victim in that piece -- I suspect the victim would enjoy reading it, actually. Cozad doesn't even get the Jerk Of The Day award in Colorado -- check out the link at the bottom of TBH's first post about the T-ball coach who paid his kids to bean a semi-retarded boy with baseballs.

After he misses a kick, does he run to the coach and show him that his shoe laces were loose?

I can't imagine wanting to punt so badly, for a 1aa college team no less. "idiot kicker"

Cozad is still in the running for the award, BullpenPro, the T-ball incident was in Pennsylvania, back in June. The guy is on trial now.

Man, and here I didn't think this was worthy of an FPP and dropped it in the Link Dump in the Locker Room. *hangs head in shame*

The assailant fled in a black Dodge Charger, Kessler said. About 10 minutes after the attack, a liquor store clerk told police that two men in a car matching that description stopped outside the store, stripped tape off the license plate and drove away. The clerk gave police the license number and the car was traced to Cozad Wow. Criminal mastermind at work. These guys should really not be allowed to call themselves student athletes. That or we're going to have to seriously lreview those SAT questions for the appropriate difficulty level. In closing: MENDOZZZZZZAAAAAA!!!!!!

Does anybody even care who the punter is? Its a pretty meaningless job. To stab someone for the glory of punting the football is astounding to say the least

"WHY, WHY?" Seriously, nothing can bring a program down quicker than a thug, punk punter. If something happens and these charges never amount to anything, he can probably transfer to the University of Colorado and be their starting quarterback (or running back, etc. His choice).
