Hard-Core Cubs Fan Dies After Sox Win Pennant: Two weeks ago, 68-year old Irene Egan conceded to her son that she knew the Sox were doing well. "She's like, 'If them damn Sox go to the World Series, it will be the death of me,'" Allen Grove said. One week later, the Sox did, indeed, seal their first trip to baseball's Fall classic in 46 years. Two days after that, the 68-year-old lifelong Cub fan died.

See...hate is poison.

Irene sounds like one of the great Chicago characters who Mike Royko would have celebrated in his column -- a hard-living, Sox-hating, baseball-loving Irish bartender. If her heart was that closely tied to the Great Game, I'm surprised the playoffs two years ago didn't kill her.

My kind of gal. Consistent to the end. Usually the haters hang on to life - it's fuel.

Red Sox winning, White Sox winning, is any of this mentioned in the book of Revalations? Sinners repent!

No HATER, there's a few more sports miracles that need to happen to truly usher in the end days: 1). The Cubs need to win a World Series 2). The Detroit Lions need to find a consistantly good quarterback (this one will take another grazillion eons)

"She's probably having bar fights in heaven," her grandaughter said. I can only hope somebody, somewhere, remembers this for my epitaph.

OK, so who do you hate that much? "Please, let me live a long and happy life, and while you're at it, please don't let the ________ win the championship until after I'm gone."

Average life expectancy for females is about 78. I don't think all the White Sox hatred helped the bitter lady live a longer life. One less Cubs fan to listen to lament and talk about "next year." GO SOX!!

It's a fact of life...when one Cubs fan goes down, two more take her place. We will rule the world! Just wait 'til next year!

willthrill72... You're only proving my point. Besides, the Cubs have the biggest marketing machine in the world, the Tribune. If they're not talking about the Cubs on WGN-TV, they're on WGN Radio, if not there, then in the Chicago Trib. If you're not from Chicago, you'ld think there's only one MLB team here... well actually there is, and they're 3-0 in the World Series.

Maybe they can scatter her ashes at home plate on opening day. Dusty can then kick her on an umpire the next time he argues a call!
