Of course, as the Barenaked Ladies have sung, "It's all been done before."

This means I might have more spectators watching me umpire at one of my middle school games than at the Orioles vs White Sox. I feel proud and humble.

And before.

CNN called this the first time in U.S. major sports for a game to be played to an audience of none.

Got an empty stadium game but want some crowd noise? Georgia Dome's the place to go.

I have seen this in a few Serie A (Italy's top tier soccer league).

Once was because of a health scare (measles outbreak or something) but more common is a sanction against either or both teams, usually fan violence or inappropriate signs.

As a soccer coach, watching on these games on TV was entertaining as you get a true feel for how much the players and coaches talk during the game.

I wonder if the broadcast of this game will have a delay to allow them to bleep out any inappropriate language you might not hear with a large crowd.

"Strike!"
"No [beeeeep] chance that was over the plate."

This is MLB TV's free game today.

"Field of Screams" would be this game with Earl Weaver and Ozzie Guillen managing.

I am just now realizing how much the silence in play-by-play is masked by the crowd noise. The White Sox color commentators are clearly trying hard to fill more space than they're used to. This is creepy.

Meanwhile the MLB Network has the Yankees broadcast with John Sterling, making silence seem even more attractive.
