'Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders' (1979): Your NFL team probably has cheerleaders. But this team's cheerleaders had a movie made about them. And because they're from a place where they like to do things big, when that movie was broadcast, it was viewed on 60% of the televisions in use at the time. The second* most watched made-for-TV movie in history was a production of the American Broadcasting Company. At the time, it was the most successful television network in the country -- thanks to "jiggle" programming like Three's Company, Charlie's Angels, and Battle of the Network Stars (via MetaFilter).

Embarrassing Juvenile Memory Number 443:

I think I remember them on an episode of The Love Boat.

Loved the opening credits. Special appearance by Bunky Funkin Dent. How the hell did he get cast in that thing?

Not sure what owl means by "them". He might be referring to one cheerleader in particular.

As a Jersey kid born and raised, my entire family consists of either Giants or Jets fans but I became a Cowboys fan because of the star on the helmet and the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Ahhh, memories!!

The two-minute disco dance sequence is awesome.

Not the Steelers. I found it easy to ogle the eye candy of the opposing teams' fluff squad, but was always glad my team didn't need such help.

I remember that, too. And it was "them" as in a gaggle of them. I would bet, in hindsight, that they were on to promote the movie (which I also remember).
