Why Can't This Guy Crack the Lineup?: Johnny Mac - Trick Shot Quarterback — University of Connecticut quarterback Johnny McEntee and his "trick shot" passing abilities. McEntee is a redshirt junior at UConn. Despite his accuracy, for some reason he has yet to play a down in a college game. No doubt there is a lot more that goes into being a successful quarterback than tossing a football into a garbage can from a catwalk (via MetaFilter).

dang (regardless of how much editing it might have taken)

Why? I can think of three reasons: 1) In real games, they don't let you do 50 takes and pick the best one 2) Being a QB is more than pass accuracy- you have to view the field incredibly fast, make snap decisions, and execute 3) (stealing from Metafilter) Water bottles don't hit back

Seriously, there wasn't one shot I saw that showed two consecutive impressive throws. Any adult male who's spent their childhood throwing a football is going to be reasonably accurate; anyone doing it in an organized fashion will be pretty darn good. Yet he does nothing any 3rd-string Division III QB couldn't do, if given a video camera, a lazy weekend, and an installed copy of iMovie.

A pro QB in Minnesota tried one of the simple ground level throws at the Xcel Energy Center.

He overshot the trash can and a Zamboni that had switched to a deep drop grabbed the ball before it could hit the ground, and took it to the tunnel for six.

How about the "left goal post, right goal post, kick ball up to hand, connecting bar"? That was three consecutive throws in a row.

Even if you assume multiple takes, some of those passes were incredible -- like the fourth sitting basketball pass and the one from high up on the wall indoors into the trash can. Hard to believe he's not taken a single snap in college.

The thing I like is that he goes into his technical foundation before the throws.

Gets the ball up with both hands on it, rotates the shoulders, gets the feet moving, etc.

Maybe Coach Edsall knows something that we don't know. Maybe McEntee pissed off that UConn uber booster. He may get a shot at some PT from new Coach Pasqualoni.

But making a video like this can't be a help to his career prospects. If the staff feels like they're being shown up by a hotshot, to the point that folks (like us) will question why he's never taken a snap in a game, that won't go well. Coaches likely don't want their third string QB to be a world famous folk hero.

I'd at least try him out as the holder on FG's and PAT's. You want to put in a trick play, he might be your guy.

If he was on the field and I was the opposing DC trying to defend against him, I'd form a Sal Alosi commemorative wall of red Rubbermaid trash barrels along my team sideline to encourage him to throw the ball out of bounds.

Depends on the coach and school. Ohio State loved Mark Titus.

Nice!

Being able to throw accuratly has nothing to do with being able to read a defense or coverage. You can ave a million dollar arm, but if you dont have the brains to make the right read or go through your receiver progression correctly or learn the offense, it will not matter.
