SNIT!: Badass Japanese Precision Walking Competition. Craziness starts at 1:45, and just gets better from there on (via MetaFilter).

And it all took place in front of a hushed, packed house, with moments punctuated by crisp, polite applause. Serious business.

Either the US needs to have more stuff like this in our culture to keep from having our lazy, undisciplined, individualistic behinds taken to the cleaners in the changing global economy, or we'll be OK because if the Japanese spent less time on stuff like this and more time on stuff that really matters, they would have figured a way out of their interminable economic doldrums a long time ago.

I didn't watch all the way to the end. Is there a moment when the custodians come out with ceremonial swords and begin attacking the guys that left all those black heel marks on their freshly waxed gym floor?

Wow, just imagining the amount of training time needed to pull that off is mind boggling.

Any company of US Marines, straight out of boot camp, could, with a little practice, do as well as these guys. As an added bonus, they'd do it with rifles and execute the manual of arms.

The only part of that display that was jaw-dropping to me was when the two groups passed through each other while walking backwards.

Walking forwards, you can make small corrections to avoid hitting each other because you can see what's about to happen.

Backwards? That's crazy.

But would they do it with half the humor and creativity?

Not getting the disparaging comments. I thought it was fun to watch.
