Jimmy Clausen Falls to Panthers as 48th Pick: Projected as a top-10 pick by many analysts -- Mel Kiper Jr. rated him No. 4 -- Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen fell all the way to the 48th spot and the Carolina Panthers. Mike Freeman of CBS Sports claims that Clausen's cockiness was the reason. "Clausen's smirk may have cost him $20 million," he writes. Clausen has been trying to live down his reputation ever since announcing his arrival at Notre Dame by exiting a stretch limo in front of the College Football Hall of Fame. "Some people say I'm cocky," he said. "They say I'm not a good leader, I'm not a good teammate. The people who are saying those things don't know me."
Kiper was trying to save face on this by saying this was Panthers first overall pick.

Kiper wouldn't/shouldn't take something like this as an insult. He rates players based on how he believes they will perform at the pro level, not based on where they will go in the draft. That's why his list is called "best available".
He (still) believes Clausen was the 4th best player on the board, regardless of when he was taken. I'd say he's pretty good at his job too...better than most, anyways. He's an ass, sure, but like Clausen, being an ass doesn't necessarily mean your not good at your job :-)

Say what you will about Mel Kiper Jr., but he has a sense of humor about himself (as evidenced by his visits to PTI), whereas Todd McShay's pomposity makes me want to kick his dog.

Mel Kiper Jr. The one and only.
I watched day 2 of the draft yesterday on a Jet Blue flight with no sound. Too cheap to buy the headset.
Watching Kiper while listening to the caffeinated haggis that comes out of his mouth is bad enough.
Watching him go through his facial expressions with no sound was even worse. His facial muscular contortions are tighter than a DAR member's sphincter.
He should be selling Toyotas in New Hampshire.
