flickr anyone?: I have a flickr pro account to give away. If anyone wants it comment here and I'll check it in the morning. Lowest member number gets it (assuming you've actully participated at spofi).

This flickr... is it something you have to own a camera to understand?

posted by thatweirdguy2 at 06:48 PM on April 29, 2005

Um, not to understand, but to use, yeah.

posted by justgary at 06:55 PM on April 29, 2005

I'd love to get a pro account. mucho spanks if I get to be so lucky!

I'll chime in. Dunno what my member number is though.

Ok, now I feel really bad for not having more. Chicobangs is the lowest but doesn't want it, I think yerfatma is the next, but do you want it? Who is the lowest who wants it? I suck at contests.

Looks like if yerfatma doesn't want it, then emoeby, at #202, is your man/woman.

How does this flckr pro give away work? Is it anything like the Gmail account give aways? If anybody has flckr pro account to give, I would be happy to take it off of your hands. Speaking of Gmail, if you happen to need an account, I've got about 50 invites to give away. Drop me a line at slash5 AT gmail DOT com.

posted by NoMich at 04:24 PM on April 30, 2005

Flickr recently announced some changes and threw some benefits towards the Pro members including 2 invites for free Pro accounts to give away. Presumably that's where justgary is coming from.

posted by gspm at 05:35 PM on April 30, 2005

gspm is right. if you signed up for a pro account before a certain date they gave them to you. i have one to give away now and possibly another one later. i was thinking of the best way to decide on who to give it to. so i figured i'd give it to someone who is already a member of the sportsfilter group on flickr and has posted a fair amount of photos. so, grum, looks like it's all yours if you want it.

posted by goddam at 05:50 PM on April 30, 2005

and don't forget about the photo pool in the sportsfilter group. i seem to be the only schmuck posting pictures there.

posted by goddam at 05:52 PM on April 30, 2005

where is the group? Searching for sportsfilter and spofi brought up zilch results.

posted by scully at 06:09 PM on April 30, 2005

posted by lil_brown_bat at 07:35 PM on April 30, 2005

sorry, i forgot. it's a private group. if you add me as a contact (username is goddam) i can send you an invite to the group.

posted by goddam at 09:48 PM on April 30, 2005

You already have to have a flcker account?

posted by NoMich at 11:09 PM on April 30, 2005

for what? the pro account or the spofi group? for the spofi group all you need is a basic account which is free.

posted by goddam at 11:34 PM on April 30, 2005

I meant the SpoFi group. Thanks.

posted by NoMich at 12:16 AM on May 01, 2005

Alright, not talking about this one (I didn't plan on getting seriously into flickr until my book was done, and I figured I'd just get one when I needed it later on), but if someone else (or you, justgary) has another extra one they don't want, I'll happily take it. Sorry about that. I thought I was being gracious. I totally didn't mean to lord anything over anyone, especially something as nebulous as a user number.

posted by chicobangs at 01:19 AM on May 01, 2005

So if i have this right, yerfatma and chicobangs is the lowest, but both would rather have it go to emoeby? Sorry chicobangs, I only have one of the two left. I gave the other to a friend, though about now I wish I had kept it for here. I also hope no one is upset about the member number thing. Some of the most prolific members have high numbers. I just needed a quick way to pick someone.

Yay for new folks in sportsfilter flickr group! We should find more ways to promote it, I wouldn't have guessed so many people didn't know about it. Maybe the Pantheon could replace the link to the SpoFi Wiki on the lockerroom front page with a link to the flickr group. The Wiki domain has expired, so the link now just acts as an ad for godaddy.com. (The wiki content is here, at least for now.) I sent an email about this to the address at the top of lockerroom front page a few weeks ago, but never heard anything back. Sorry to interrupt.

Yay for new folks in sportsfilter flickr group! We should find more ways to promote it, I wouldn't have guessed so many people didn't know about it. As mentioned above, the Flickr group is private and apparently requires one to ask about it without knowing about it to join it. There was a thread on the Flickr group board about whether to open it to everyone with text letting people know that it is intended for members of Sportsfilter, but it has been met with silence. Personally I don't like the idea of a private group, especially if there is no effort whatsoever to invite members of the community to join it. This is not meant to be a competing group, just an alternative.

posted by scully at 09:37 AM on May 10, 2005

so what do i have to do? join flickr. give my deets to a group member, so they can invite me. then im in?

posted by garfield at 10:15 AM on May 10, 2005

i sent an email to ufez, who is one of the admins, to see if he can make the group public.

posted by goddam at 10:54 AM on May 10, 2005

goddam: From what I have seen setting up the new group, making a group public that is set to private may be impossible. Here is a screen capture from the admin section of SpoFi Flickr: Image hosted by Photobucket.com Sorry about the inline image.

posted by scully at 12:11 PM on May 10, 2005

terrapin, you're the man. I just joined the SpoFi group, and hope many more will.

posted by qbert72 at 02:04 PM on May 10, 2005

garfield: to join the original Sportsfilter Flickr group you'll need to be invited by a member of the group. To join's terrapin's new SpoFi group, you just need to join.

posted by qbert72 at 02:07 PM on May 10, 2005

you know, terrapin, you could have uploaded that image to flickr. using photobucket to store a flickr screenshot? weird and meta.

posted by gspm at 02:24 PM on May 10, 2005

Sorry, gspm. If the powers that be want to delete it, and point to the Photobucket page, have at it. It is only 2.5k

posted by scully at 03:18 PM on May 10, 2005

I had no objection to the inline image, doesn't bug me (i've posted images from time to time myself). just thought it was humourous to use photobucket to post that image. though I can understand not caring to see it in your flickr photostream.

posted by gspm at 03:20 PM on May 10, 2005

gspm: As selfish as it seems I didn't want the image to show up in my Flickr badge on my homepage. That's the only reason I did it.

posted by scully at 03:32 PM on May 10, 2005

not selfish. understandable.

posted by gspm at 05:11 PM on May 10, 2005

Can you get flickr to print photos as well? If not, who do you suggest that I use?

posted by NoMich at 06:22 PM on May 10, 2005

Personally I suggest a really good printer to print photos. And good printers are not that expensive anymore.

posted by scully at 10:37 AM on May 11, 2005

terrapin: when you add up the cost of photographic paper, archival inks, a good printer and your time, it's often a LOT cheaper to have them printed. Plus the quality is nearly always better. Printers are convenient, but photo labs are better. I take my shots to the local Longs drugs. My internet connection is reasonably fast for downloads, but if I want to print 50 photos, they take forever to upload to an internet site. I just burn them onto a CDRW and walk them over, then pick them up in an hour. No uploading, no shipping, etc. The prints are excellent (better than any of the "pro" shops in my area), and cheap, too!

posted by dusted at 03:41 PM on May 11, 2005

Did you get any of your pictures from your motorcycle trip printed using Longs? They look pretty fantastic on your site.

posted by NoMich at 06:40 PM on May 11, 2005

Yeah, I printed quite a few (for me and friends) and they came out really nice. They're in a shoebox now, but it's fun to look through it once in a while. You should have seen the cute photo tech girl's face when I told her I wanted several hundred prints. "How many?!! ... there's no way I can get this done in an hour!"

posted by dusted at 11:46 PM on May 11, 2005

To each their own, dusted. I rarely print my photos anymore. When I use regular film, I use slide film and print selectively at professional photography places like Chrome in DC. I still think for the occasional printed photo, the $150 Epson my wife got (for printing directly onto CDs for her clients) does an awesome job of printing photos. YMMV (which is why I said "personally" in my original comment).

posted by scully at 07:55 AM on May 12, 2005

To each their own, dusted. Definitely. I was just giving my opinion.
