Panthenon, can you remove this link? We're uh, getting the old "here's a picture that will mentally scar you and your future children, stop stealing our bandwidth" replacement picture from time to time.

As foul as that picture is, and while I can't wait to get it removed, this is a pretty decent point that whoever it is are making. Stealing bandwidth from someone via posting a picture here really isn't cool (and it happens all the time here on SpoFi). Take the picture and put it on your own webspace first. If you've not got webspace, either A) get some, or B) don't post pics.

Ufez: If we're going to take the high road, republishing the picture on our own server is a copyright violation. Of course, in this example, the publisher probably doesn't have the right to publish a picture of Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, so there's a "no honor among thieves" defense.

Aww man! I never got to see it!

posted by StarFucker at 11:11 AM on October 07

P.s. Those of us who saw the picture should agree to tell everyone it was a picture of Jim Plunkett.

posted by rcade at 11:14 AM on October 07

You don't need to see it, StarFucker. You posed for it.

Of course, in this example, the publisher probably doesn't have the right to publish a picture of Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, so there's a "no honor among thieves" defense. That's true, but with stealing a picture and using it for our private use, which is what it is, the original 'owner' of the image is not suffering any viable loss. Unless it's a one of a kind image that someone is using expressly for trying to gain money, and not just a headshot of Robin Yount, the likes of which thousands exist, I'm not too concerned about that. Bandwith costs cash though, which can be pinpointed as an actual loss. I doubt anyone would sue over lost bandwidth, unless it were some enormous amount, the likes of which SpoFi won't generate. But it is pretty lame to swipe money from people, even if it is just pennies.

whatever it takes not to see that pic again.

posted by garfield at 12:16 PM on October 07

Grum: Yes. A Webmaster goatsexed us as punishment for displaying an image from his server here. Anyone who doesn't know the meaning of that term should avoid googling it for any reason.

posted by rcade at 01:21 PM on October 07

That's just not right, rcade.

I'm pretty sure that copying a pic for posting here falls within fair use. Of course, I think that pic was from England, so maybe the rules are different there. But England sucks, except for the football and the Beatles, so...

posted by billsaysthis at 01:43 PM on October 07

ain't it grand somebody called a 'webmaster' imposes punishment with gay pron. the brute simplicity of it is genius: no conditioning needed, once is enough.

I just call it good. Agred garfield. At least the folks at Something Awful had the good taste to use a naked breast when I learned my lesson (and let's not be coy jerseygirl: didn't that show up in preview?). It's not the fact someone used the goatse picture; it's that they had the stomach to edit it in PhotoShop (or, more appropriately, "The GIMP"). Then again, I did revisit tubgirl to make sure I saw what I thought I saw before I went temporarily blind. And to get directions on how to get away from there.

posted by yerfatma at 03:40 PM on October 07

"Agred" is a word used in the electronica community to indicate approval of another's opinion. The etymology is murky.

posted by yerfatma at 03:40 PM on October 07

(and let's not be coy jerseygirl: didn't that show up in preview?). Uh sure... because I was dying to just show everyone what some random guy's colon and lower intestine looked like. In fact, when I checked back a few times to see if it had been deleted, I was still seeing the intended picture from time to time.

yerfatma, any suggestions to check out? my subscription to UNCUT just ran out.

Moral: always clear your browser cache when testing such things. Or just use a different browser that doesn't have the pic cached. (I learned this the hard way once, thought the damage turned out to be minimal.)

There are some advantages: 1) When kicked between the legs, I have only a %50 chance of throwing up. 2) Athletic cups 50% off? I'm there! 3) Excellent way to tell if your new doctor is paying attention. If he has me cough and then doesn't say, "Uhhh, hey, did you know..." I dump him. 4) Get to correct people when they tell me I'm nuts, or have a lot of balls.

My cousin had to have one of his removed, and now walks around with an original and a plastic replica in his ballbag. Very few people outside the family understand why we call Matt "Lefty", when he's clearly right-handed. True story.

posted by kloeprich at 06:56 PM on October 09

I've heard about the falsie ... but why screw with a good conversation piece? Oh, and when you say "replica," you mean they fashioned the plastic one to resemble the one he lost? Classy!

posted by wfrazerjr at 05:30 PM on October 10

It was actually fashioned to resemble Abe Lincoln's right nut. It's a historical replica. If I remember correctly, the Franklin Mint has a whole line of them out.
