Duke Super Bowl: In-depth analysis of tomorrow's clash of 1-9 college football titans. Mostly sophomoric, but humor us Duke fans on our one chance for football glory...

"The worst thing that's happened to college basketball since I've been coaching": The linked blog agrees with Bobby that it is basically cheating- but "if you're not cheating, you're not trying." Interesting read on something we're sure to hear more about as OSU (Greg Oden) and Texas (Kevin Durant) advance through the Madness.

Why Beckham is not Pele.: A really excellent post on why MLS and NASL are in very different situations when they signed their aging superstars. (Related: why LA isn't getting an NFL team any time soon.)

Roller-coaster ride for men's: and women's #1 teams. College basketball season is here in earnest, and I couldn't be happier.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the ugliest helmet in the history of organized football is inside this link.: Click it. You know you want to. (Pantheon: I think we need a new 'ugly' category, just for this post. Trust me.)

830!: .406, 61* (or 73, I suppose), 56, 100, 2,632... 830 joins the pantheon of great sports numbers.

Mavs win! Mavs win!: Or at least, that's DaveSez's ironclad prediction, based on... the number of ACC alums on each team. Fun little analysis, if perhaps a little skewed by a certain UNC guy.

Dean Smith unretires: Forget the Tubby Smith rumors, it's Dean to UVa. Dean: "I'm really looking forward to competing against [K] again. He's a good coach and I wonder if he still feels challenged. He has so much confidence now that he's able to spend lots of time away from his job filming commercials. Have you seen his commercials yet?

There is this thing.: That happens in March. You may have heard of it. You probably break the law for it. You almost definitely work less because of it. Now we have our very own thread to talk about it.

Bracket?: Will we have a bracket again this year? [And who will be energetic enough to actually do a front page post about the tourney? NOT IT. (touches finger to nose.)]

The Oakland A's of college football.: I have previously said here at spofi that recruiting at a championship level at Notre Dame is impossible, but Charlie Weis may make me eat my words. He doesn't want to recruit better, he wants to recruit smarter- Moneyball for college football, though he doesn't say it.

ND really, really screwed?: If this (a former ND assistant from the midwest with catholic roots has chosen UF over ND) is true, ND has really, really shot itself in the foot. Serves them right.

Happy belated birthday to the shot clock: Apparently yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the first basketball game with a shot clock. It only took Dean Smith another 30 years to bring it to college ball...

The best part of the year is creeping closer.: Andy Katz lists his 50 best teams for the upcoming college basketball season. Could be a banner year for the (new, watered down) ACC, with 3 of the top 4, 4 of the top 10, and 5 in the top 15.

Under-17 team helped out by addition of... 13 year old?: I can't find the first piece I saw this in, but... is this kid for real? The other article said he was offered six figures by one of the european clubs when he was 11. That's nuts. C'mon... I know there are soccer nuts here. Give me the scoop :)

Alana Beard goes 16-30,: rest of the team goes 3-29, but Duke still wins. UConn (or is it Diana Taurasi?) wins a second tight one. Should be an exciting showdown on Feb. 1st for those of us who follow the women's game.

So that Bonds guy is going to win the NL MVP award.: But what about the AL? I suppose this could be an annual debate here, but do you give it to the best player or to an inferior player with a better pitching staff? I suppose my framing of the question sort of predicts my answer, but I'm curious as to what others have to say.

Intentionally walking Barry Bonds is Dumb.: As great as Barry is, he makes an out nearly 50% of his plate appearances. He was just intentionally walked in an inning where the Giants scored two runs with two outs; it's a great example of what this article is talking about.
