I think the 49ers tried to use RC Owens (he of the Alley-Oop) to try to block long field goals in the 1950s. I think he did manage to tip one away, and the league may have amended the rule after that, but I'd have to look it up.

BoKnows, I believe that when the DH was introduced in 1973, it was on a three-year (or so) trial basis, but the league quickly (like, a month into the season) made it permanent.

Why did the clock continue to run after Brady threw the final incompletion? There were at least four seconds on the game clock and it ran down to one after the play was clearly over.

As a Mets fan, to me the best thing about this deal is that they now can abandon thoughts of Kyle Lohse and Livan Hernandez. The lineup still strikes me as a bit thin, especially at the corner outfield spots, the bench and the bullpen, if everyone's not healthy.

Seconding dyams on the baseball-card book -- one of the best sports books ever written. One quibble: It came out in the early to mid '70s, cos' I had a copy when I was in grade school. It was reissued in updated form in the early '90s. Years ago, I wrote a piece for a baseball Web site where I went back and found out that Charley Maxwell really didn't do all that well on Sundays in 1956...

While it did look like a pretty cool event (well, frigid, it being January in Buffalo), I'd be concerned about the added potential for injury to players like Crosby due to falling snow or hail. Dyams, since you've played in these conditions, can you address what impact the precipitation might have had on the ice conditions?

Chico, Do you mean to say that, by your reasoning, I should stop reading the Lotto column in my local paper just because the numbers being picked in the next drawing have nothing to do with any of the numbers picked previously? If that's the case, MR. BANGS, then Mr. Lotto wouldn't be the mogul he is. He'd be writing a crappy syndicated column appealing to weak-minded idiots... wait, never mind...

I hate the Patriots, but hats off to running the table. Still, it seemed to me that the calls were really going New England's way, especially in the first half (the play clock had hit zero before Brady took the snap on that early 4th-and-2 call; the defensive back foul that negated a 3rd-and-14 giants sack). Teams know how to beat the Pats -- it's just a matter of whether they can stay poised enough to do it. If the Giants had held on, I was going to make the comparison between this year's Pats and the '97 Vikings. I guess I still am -- I predict they won't go 19-0, but I'm hard-pressed to say who'll knock them off. I'd like to see Brett Favre do it.

I went to a Titans match at Madison Square Garden early this year and it was great fun -- fast-paced, hard-hitting and down to the wire. Plus, everyone was invited on to the field after it was over to meet the players. Still, there were 1,500 spectators, tops, and that was disappointing. I would have gone back.
