Florida 41, Ohio State 14

There were so many things that went wrong last night, you have to blame everybody. Urban Meyer out-coached Tressel. In the Texas game this year, Ohio State never was able to pick up any of the screen passes without surrendering a 5-yard gain by the opposition. Meyer was disciplined enough to keep taking what was given to him, and that was a soft zone Cover 2 that the Florida WR's picked apart. It doesn't take a football genius to realize that the linebackers (who I guess were supposed to be playing spy but really looked to be standing around) can't cover the receiver sets. Much less, having your two safeties line up 10-15 yards from the line of scrimmage made it easy for Florida to continually get those short gains. One of the keys for Florida going into the game was stopping the Ohio State running game. They didn't have to stop anything because for some reason, we abandoned the running game. When Pittman broke off two nice runs to get the score back to 21-14, it looked like we completely gave up on the running game. I didn't get throwing on a 1st and 2nd down, then running on a 3rd and long. I'm not saying it would have been completely different, but Teddy Ginn requires at least man coverage, sometimes the double team. It is Teddy Ginn who allows the other Buckeye receivers to get open. But this is just speculation because Boone and Barton played horrible and the Florida DE's were getting heavy pressure by themselves. Florida could call a 4-3 and have all their linebackers sit back and the pocket would still collapse. At this point, I'm all in favor of a playoff system. I think the 51-day layoff played a small part in the slaughter, but not anything that would have drastically changed the score. I do know, the Ohio State team that came out last night was not the same that dominated their other 12 games. An 8-team playoff to decide the National Champion would be easy to do. You're only concerned with the #1 team, so any controversy over the #8/#9/#10 spots should be considered irrelevant. If you gave #1 and #2 bye-weeks, you could even keep the existing bowls. Week 1: Sugar - 3v6, Fiesta - 4v5 Week 2: Rose - 1v4, Orange - 2v3 Week 3: NC - 1v2 The bowls could rotate like they currently do and I think everyone wins. But, I can take heart in one thing. At least I wasn't one of the many OSU fans who paid a few thousand dollars to fly to Arizona, scalp a ticket and come to wish I'd put the money into a flat-panel, 42" HD television instead. If I had dropped that kind of coin to watch that fiasco, I really be ticked off today. I paid $2500 for my seat, $500 combined on airfare and hotel plus some other expenditures. I could have taken the money and put it in a mutual fund or collected interest on it in a savings account, but not very often do you get to see your team in a National Championship. It does leave a very bad taste in your mouth when winning this game was supposed to be a formality, but you can't win them all. None-the-less, this disgusting loss won't deter me from traveling again to another Ohio State championship game when the time comes. Hindsight is 20/20, and had it been an OSU victory, I couldn't have spent that money any better.

I'm not envious. New Jersey has 39 million in commited salary, a reduced cap because they went over last year and still haven't signed Gomez and Gionta. Have fun with Elias though.

Chara to the Bruins for 5 Years @ 7.5/yr

I wouldn't want to necessarily, "break up" the Boyes line, but I think Savard would be on the first line and Boyes would move to the second. Both are talented centers, but I'd give Savard the nod. And the 1-2 pairing of Chara - Stuart/Mara is very impressive. I thought the Bruins were in a "rebuilding" stage when Samsonov left, apparently I misunderstood and they are really just "rebuying."

Chara to the Bruins for 5 Years @ 7.5/yr

v3rity, Gary is well within his rights to eliminate anything you post. Then maybe he should "eliminate" half your post which has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Loungo and McCabe were not free agents, but players who resigned with their teams instead of becoming free agents. I'm sorry I misrepresented (although clicking on either report clearly states that they were never free agents). You are correct, McCabe resigned with the Leafs before becoming a Free Agent and Luongo reworked his contract for a longer term. I felt it was important to post their two signings along with the other signings, but I'm glad you cleared up any misunderstanding someone could have. The small mistake still doesn't void the fact that Luongo is making the same amount of money Khabibulin is and Luongo has no playoff experience. I suppose on the plus side, you did not wish a deadly disease on any of the players mentioned in your posting, or make a racist comment about them. Hooray for derailment. If you want to talk about Crynaldo, go ahead and create your own WC thread and we can talk about it there. You did however say Ed Jonanovski was aging. Well, aren't we all? It certainly beats the alternative. Nothing gets past you, does it? Any reasonable person would assume that aging means that Jovo is showing his age (he turned 30 this week). While his 05-06 performance is respectable, he hasn't played a full season since his 02-03 campaign.

Chara to the Bruins for 5 Years @ 7.5/yr

I tried to post this in the last topic, but trigger-finger gary decided to axe the topic. McCabe to the Leafs for 5 Years @ 5.75/yr
Luongo to the Canucks for 4 Years @ 6.8/yr
Savard to the Bruins for 5 Years @ 4/yr
Jovocop to the Coyotes for 5 Years @ 6.5/yr
Kubina to the Leafs for 4 years @ 5/yr
Mckee to the Blues for 4 Years @ 4/yr
Blake to the Kings for 2 years @ 6/yr
The Bruins overspent with Chara but picking up Savard for $4 million a year is pretty slick. He will pair well with German winger Marco Sturm. Jovocop is aging and at $6.5 million, teams not needing an immediate defensive veteran could certainly do better.

2006 NHL Free Agency

V3rity, this is just a link to a list of transactions. Please read the guidelines. This isn't an open discussion board. Oh boy, thanks! I'll remember next time to make individual posts for each trade just to please you. I just listed eight major signings in the NHL; but apparently this doesn't count as news.

World Cup Semifinals Set: Germany, Italy, Portugal and France

Being ranked fifth in the world, I still believe the Americans can pull it off. USA! USA! There should be an American Wildcard, where America plays the winner of the World Cup for the true international title.

What do you think, this is a race to see who can post the info first? This is a sports discussion website. Would you prefer to post headlines and discuss topics that are a week old so that everyone can catch up and view them "live" without having the ending spoiled? The two games today took place on a Saturday, anyone who was a true fan of the game would have made plans to watch their team play.

And why would you not post the results for the World Cup? There was a post here when the United States were eliminated in the Group Phase. There was a post here immediately after the Huricanes won the Stanley Cup and when the Heat won the NBA Championship. If you don't want to know sports results, why are you going to a sports website?

How did you all miss the wink that Ronaldo gave Rooney after Rooney was sent off? He deserves what comes to him. It'll be a very interesting Man U camp when Rooney and Van Nistelrooy return with Ronaldo. Make no mistake, if Ronaldo played Serie A and had an Italian National Team player sent off, he wouldn't be playing in Italy anymore. He must really want to go to Madrid.

World Cup Semifinals Set: Germany, Italy, Portugal and France

I tried to make the original post as unbiased as I could, but now I'm going to lay into England. First and foremost though, I hope that Ronaldo gets AIDS. Rooney was fighting for the ball and stepped back to gain ground -- completely accidental. But then here comes grease-eating Ronaldo crying like a little bitch with a skinned knee pleading to get Rooney sent off. Rooney gives Ronaldo the equivalent of a tap on the shoulder and gets an instant red. I don't think the ref was even going to card Rooney for the original foul (he didn't even reach in his pocket), he did it for the shove. You see that same shove in all games with no repurcussions. Sven is horrible. I hate him with a passion. I know what Argentina felt like when their coach took off Riquelme. Sven cost England their chance at the cup. His first error was only bringing two guaranteed strikers (Crouch and Owen). Rooney was coming off an injury and no one was sure of his condition (although he played fine) and Theo Walcott is 17 and was scouted off video. And while I'm not doubting Walcott's talent, when you get to the quarterfinals and it's crunch time, you don't feel comfortable putting out a 17 year old who has never played for his country. Jermaine Defoe would have been a much better choice. Defoe plays on the Hotspurs along with Lennon and I think pairing up the young Lennon with a fellow club teammate would have meant more goals for England. After Owen was injured, Sven abandoned the 4-4-2 (which at least produced chances by pressuring the defense) in favor of the unexciting 4-5-1 and seemed to be against quick counter-attacks. A report said that Sven would not give inspirational talks or quote Churchill because Sven said that isn't how he coaches. When your team is playing like piss, you need to do something instead of sit on your ass and spectate. Even had England advanced and played France, we would be without Rooney and Terry, our only pure striker and our best defender. Crouch isn't horrible, but he can not play up top by himself and seemed to have lots of trouble in the air (which is weird because he is 6'6, so the air should have been his specialty). Sven needed to replace Lampard in the Sweden game. While he had a couple of nice chances, Lampard came up empty throughout the entire World Cup on 20 shots (9 on goal). Joe and Ashley Cole were non-existant in today's game against Portugal, they didn't make the runs they had made in prior games. Gerrard should most definantely captain this squad in Euro 2008.

Prefer a language you don't understand over Dave O'Brien?

Have you guys seen the after-game shows on Univision though? Hot women with large breasts dancing all over the screen. I watched the England game on Univision and I was amused that the announcer kept referring to Beckham as "spice men." I'm really pissed at ESPN's coverage though, they'll show a replay of something over and over WHILE THE GAME IS GOING ON.

Who Says a Tie is a Bad Thing?

A tie isn't a bad thing, it just isn't a good thing. Because now, even if the United States wins against Ghana, we have to count on Italy winning against the Czech Republic. And if Italy loses or ties, we have to beat Ghana by at least three goals.

US Stumbles Out of the Gates

I really enjoy everyone citing the FIFA Rankings as if they were an accurate portrayal of a team's ability. Everytime a FIFA sanctioned game is played, both teams will accumulate points. Rarely does a team lose points for losing a match, so in most cases, a team can actually improve their standing by playing in a game and losing rather than not playing in a game at all. Which is why mediocre Mexico and USA are ranked ahead of powerhouses Portugal, England and Argentina. While the Czech's are FIFA ranked #2 and they are very talented, I wouldn't put them in my personal Top 5 to win the cup this year.

US Stumbles Out of the Gates

Renya was decent, but wasn't at the top of his game. Donovan and Beasley were absent. Convey looked like he had the right idea and had good intensity, but lacked the skill to do anything with it. With Italy beating Ghana, we now really need to beat Italy to guarantee us moving on. We were caught flat-footed and I completely disagree with Bruce Arena's finger pointing at the press conference afterwards. Seems almost amateurish to be calling your players out like that in public.

Ohio State's Tressel to get nearly $2.4M this season

I don't quite understand what you're getting to yerfatma. Who said that young kids making millions makes them overpaid and spoiled? Tressel has performed and his pay is justified. We're 4-1 in Bowl Games and 4-1 against Michigan in Tressel's 5 years. Not everyone enjoys Tressel ball, but his formula works.

To the average fan, soccer isn't fun to watch. And all the hardcore fans are going to watch the EPL and other equivalent European leagues. I do like the suggestion that MLS teams try to get into the Champion's leagues, that would draw at least some attention to the MLS.
