Chara to the Bruins for 5 Years @ 7.5/yr: 2006 NHL Free Agency: Increased Cap = Overspending GMs! While Chara is physical defensive force, the Bruins severly over-paid for him and within the same day, Ottawa had already signed a pair of defensemen. (More transactions are listed within the comments)
v3rity, Gary is well within his rights to eliminate anything you post. You should try to be accurate for one thing. Loungo and McCabe were not free agents, but players who resigned with their teams instead of becoming free agents. I suppose on the plus side, you did not wish a deadly disease on any of the players mentioned in your posting, or make a racist comment about them. You did however say Ed Jonanovski was aging. Well, aren't we all? It certainly beats the alternative.

v3rity, Gary is well within his rights to eliminate anything you post. Then maybe he should "eliminate" half your post which has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Loungo and McCabe were not free agents, but players who resigned with their teams instead of becoming free agents. I'm sorry I misrepresented (although clicking on either report clearly states that they were never free agents). You are correct, McCabe resigned with the Leafs before becoming a Free Agent and Luongo reworked his contract for a longer term. I felt it was important to post their two signings along with the other signings, but I'm glad you cleared up any misunderstanding someone could have. The small mistake still doesn't void the fact that Luongo is making the same amount of money Khabibulin is and Luongo has no playoff experience. I suppose on the plus side, you did not wish a deadly disease on any of the players mentioned in your posting, or make a racist comment about them. Hooray for derailment. If you want to talk about Crynaldo, go ahead and create your own WC thread and we can talk about it there. You did however say Ed Jonanovski was aging. Well, aren't we all? It certainly beats the alternative. Nothing gets past you, does it? Any reasonable person would assume that aging means that Jovo is showing his age (he turned 30 this week). While his 05-06 performance is respectable, he hasn't played a full season since his 02-03 campaign.

What? Ronaldo has AIDS? The one who plays for Portugal or Brazil? And when did those countries start playing hockey?

Chara is pricey, but 7 mil+ was the going price. Elias and Chara were certainly the two top free-agents this season. The Bruins did well to lock him up for 5 years. He's one of the top 5 defensemen in the league. Every team wanted him, and I can't wait to see him in Bruins jersey. I am still shocked that the Bruins managed to get it done. The B's 7 defenseman are now: Chara Mara Brad Stuart Jurcina Tanabe Alberts Mark Stuart Not bad. A winger to play on the second line and maybe a free agent 3rd or 4th liner or two and this team is back in the playoffs. I'm not sure why you'd pair Sturm with Savard. Why break up the Bergeron-Boyes-Sturm line? Also, try not to be a d-bag to Gary. The guy (along with the other two pantheon fellas) provides us with a great website for free. You don't have to be a kiss-ass or anything, but it's not that hard to show a little appreciation.

I wouldn't want to necessarily, "break up" the Boyes line, but I think Savard would be on the first line and Boyes would move to the second. Both are talented centers, but I'd give Savard the nod. And the 1-2 pairing of Chara - Stuart/Mara is very impressive. I thought the Bruins were in a "rebuilding" stage when Samsonov left, apparently I misunderstood and they are really just "rebuying."

V3rity, sportsfilter tries to link to good writing, new sites, etc. Your previous link was a listing of transactions. That's an easy call. Although, trigger fingers isn't bad for a nickname.

Well, we'll see about that. It will be the first season he's expected to win, a new kind of pressure for him. He does deserved Khabibulin money, though.

I was merely stating fact, and still filled with disgust over what had been written by v3rity with regards to wishing AIDS on someone for possibly embellishing a foul in a soccer game. So, if I over stepped my bounds, I'll ask you to excuse my actions. Apparently you didn't see the posting and it has since been removed, but I did, and it repulsed me.

2006 NHL Free Agency: Increased Cap = Overspending GMs! Boy ain't that the truth... "Lockout? What lockout?" I guess this proves the salary cap was in fact to protect the owners from themselves. Maybe in the next CBA they can write in 24% salary rollbacks every so many years (sarcasm). I can see someone like Chara getting the big bucks, but I'm surprised at how much guys like McKee and Kubina are getting. I realize there's over-spending across the board, and I guess that kind of defenseman is a hot commodity, but that seems really high for those two. Also saw Pisani's deal with the Oilers... 4 years, 10 milllion... Nice post season indeed, but he's still a 29 year-old who racked up a career high 37 points in the regular season.

I guess this proves the salary cap was in fact to protect the owners from themselves. Every salary cap, luxury tax or anything that tries to put brakes on spending is done to protect the owners from themselves. That's why it's always a big fat lie when the owners try to put the high salary blame on the players.

Jovocop to the Coyotes for 5 Years @ 6.5/yr Damn--that's a good sign for Phoenix IF Jovo can stay healthy; I'd hoped but didn't think realistically that the 'Nucks would be able to re-sign him after signing Luongo. Well--time to sign a younger defenseman or two. The Bruins MAY have overpaid for Chara; but many other NHL teams might've offered him the same contract (I wish Vancouver could've signed him; but they couldn't afford Jovocop much less Chara.) Good signing by Boston (and the Savard signing as well); I wouldn't be surprised if they made the playoffs next year.

I am now the one who should apologize. If that is infact true, I certainly can understand why you would address him in that manner (even if we are on a different thread). So now do I not only retract my previous staement, I also would like to "discuss" making such a hateful comment. /drops gloves /waits turn

Good signing by Boston (and the Savard signing as well) I'm guessing that sometime in 2008, Boston will contemplate buying out Savard's contract. I think the Bruins are going to discover that "contract year" + "great teammates" = "deceptive numbers". They did good in signing Chara (a legitimate star), but the Savard signing is just awful.

but the Savard signing is just awful. "contract year" + "great teammates" = "deceptive numbers". True..contract years can result in inflated numbers for some players. Perhaps (as v3rity typed above) Savard could be paired with Sturm--and Marc may put up similar numbers to last year. (Of course I'm just speculating--but Savard may even be motivated to have a good season while playing for a possible playoff team.) I don't know about his getting a 5-year contract, though, and how motivated he'll be for its duration. Maybe he'll play at a higher level in Boston than Atlanta; if I had the choice between playing for the Thrashers with their 0 playoff appearances and the Bruins with their myriad playoff appearances and 5 Cups (and of course if there wasn't a huge disparity in money offered), then I'd choose to play for the B's.

Bishop, it is true. How could you make up something like that. He attacked Ronaldo on Portugal, he said he hoped he would be infected with AIDS. Derogatory and racist terms were also used to lash out at individual players on the Portuguese team and others. I don't think you need to wait your turn, feel free to pile on.

I tried to post this in the last topic, but trigger-finger gary decided to axe the topic. McCabe to the Leafs for 5 Years @ 5.75/yr
Luongo to the Canucks for 4 Years @ 6.8/yr
Savard to the Bruins for 5 Years @ 4/yr
Jovocop to the Coyotes for 5 Years @ 6.5/yr
Kubina to the Leafs for 4 years @ 5/yr
Mckee to the Blues for 4 Years @ 4/yr
Blake to the Kings for 2 years @ 6/yr
The Bruins overspent with Chara but picking up Savard for $4 million a year is pretty slick. He will pair well with German winger Marco Sturm. Jovocop is aging and at $6.5 million, teams not needing an immediate defensive veteran could certainly do better.
