Ooooops:: The Spokane Chiefs win the Memorial Cup, and then promptly snap the trophy in half.

"It just kind of crumbled in my hands and I'm sure I'll be all over YouTube and I'll get e-mails for the rest of my life over that, but I don't care because we won the Cup and that's all that matters," said (Spokane Captain Chris) Bruton. But it was still funny as hell, thanks chico.

Thanks chico. The video is hilarious, when it fell, they just stood there and looked at it, fans booing. Then some lame-o attempt to stick it back together. Ha! But of course, there is the true minor league hockey mindset that shines through: "It's just as beautiful and maybe more beautiful that we have that top off and we can drink from the cup a little easier." I just love me some hockey.

OK, well, aside from the broken trophy, all us Spokanites (that's what we're called) are quite proud of the home club. After 17 years, we got the cup back. Most of it. I'm not the biggest hockey fan, but I do manage to go to a couple Chiefs games a year. They played well during the season, but I wouldn't have guessed that they were going to turn it on as much as they did in the post season. The Bretts also own the minor league baseball team in town, the Indians. Hopefully they can have a good season this year, too. Although they are short season single A now, back in the days of triple A ball, they were legendary. I'd like to add that our af2 team is undefeated so far this year. Just call Spokane "Title Town Junior". But don't hand us the trophy.

Oh yeah, how could I forget,. Mike Babcock used to coach the Chiefs. Wonder what he's up to these days?

Freakin hilarious. The best part is the two of them standing there with the trophy lying in pieces on the ice and the "what just fucking happened" looks on their faces. And the "we can drink from the cup a little easier" comment? Instant classic hockey quote.

BoKnows, I know it was probably just a typo but it was a "junior league", not a minor league championship. Out west, we take the "dub" pretty seriously.

jc, I should have said "there is the true hockey mindset that shines through". When I labeled the Chiefs as "minor", I think I pissed off all the NHLers cause, dammit, they were thinking the same thing about the new "ease of use" Cup. But if you want to be called junior, you got it. I'd hate for THX to have to hunt me down, talkin' all that Mike Babcock mumbo jumbo.

That is wonderful in its own way. I don't think the team captain was doing anything with the trophy that was the least bit inappropriate. When you when a trophy in public and accept it on behalf of the team, you hoist it over your head. Good for them to react with a sense of humor (albeit after the cameras stopped rolling).

...and the "what just fucking happened" looks on their faces. Yes, that and the quick peek to see if anyone was watching. I felt bad for them, but I admit I got a good laugh.

Are we sure that wasn't an out take from Slap Shot? It was priceless. We have to find somewhere other than China to get our replica trophies. There seems to be a serious quality control issue here.

We did the same thing when we won leagues this year for swimming. Of course, it was nothing glue couldn't fix and it wasn't on television.

To be fair, this isn't as catastrophic as it could have been; the cup that broke is a replica, and you can blame at least part of the mishap (maybe most of it) on inadequate construction (anything people will hoist over their heads by holding it at both ends shouldn't have too weak a center point). But still, talk about a harrowing moment.
