Somebody's getting all up in Manny's grill.: Bidding for Manny Ramirez's JENN-AIR (retail value: $4,000) is up around $20K. The grill has been used once, but as Manny says in the ad, "I never have the time to use it because I am always on the road." Can we expect the "purchase-use once-sell at an inflated price" model one we can expect to be expanded upon in the near future? Is eBay on the verge of becoming an endorsement-compensation-alternative for high profile athletes? And what impact might these straight-from-source transactions have on the memorabilia trade, if any?

Gah! Should say, "IS the 'purchase-use once-sell at an inflated price' model one we can expect to be expanded upon in the near future?" No more coffee before the first cup of posting. Update: the bidding is up to $99,999,999. This could be a huge winfall for Manny. Or, this story is not really a story about anything. Sorry.

A couple of things I've read on Baseball Think Factory about this story: 1) The grill isn't actually Manny's, but his neighbours'. He posed for the photo and put his name on the auction to help him out. 2) When the bidding goes insane (like it has now with the "all-9s" bid), it's usually a sign of some kids just playing and usually results in the auction being pulled.

If it's actually Manny's grill, don't expect it to be able to grill burgers for your All-Star game get together. And if it does other wierd things, it's just "bein' the grill".

I've got an old grill I'll sell for a hell of a lot less, and I'll even throw in a autographed Jack Clark baseball!

This whole story is kind of funny if he's just trying to help a friendly neighbor that's cool if not why doesn't he just give it away he doesn't need the money

why doesn't he just give it away he doesn't need the money Why give something away when you have suckers willing to shell out 10 times it's price for the thing?

This whole story is kind of funny if he's just trying to help a friendly neighbor that's cool if not why doesn't he just give it away he doesn't need the money Do you have any idea how much money the poor man goes through in hair care products alone? Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no...sense...of...decency? I weep for Manny; His grill lies dormant, alone While fools bid wildly. I take full responsibility for any haiku frenzies this causes. I'm good that way.
