China's National Stadium Design Competition for 2008: Ok, so why do I find the top one (B01) so strangely arousing? If they go for that one people, well men anyway, might start demanding all airlines make a fly over it before landing and after takeoffs.

Actually, B11 would be really nice to see built. I like the idea of the light escaping from the structure, like the contents are "glowing".

B12 is pretty cool. But I don't know about B11

I love the models and pictures of stadium design. The stadiums themselves are sometimes disappointing in the end, but the graphic representation of the plans make me happy regardless. I don't know why that is. Too many legos perhaps. That said, there seems to be little left in stadium design at the moment. I'm not saying that none of these are cool or innovative (B09 & B07 get my vote), just that they aren't that different than what we've seen before. What could be new? Once it was the dome. And then the retractable dome. Now, I think someone should dig a hole and build a stadium below grade. Maybe it's not feasible, but it would be different. Is there anything truly inspired out there that you've noticed?

Stadium design is constrictive by its very nature. There are only so many ways to seat massive numbers of people around a playing field and have them all be able to see the event, so you're starting with some limitations built right into the design. That being said, some of the exterior treatments on these are interesting (vagina stadium notwithstanding), although I tend to gravitate more towards the traditional - I'd like to see a modern reproduction of the Colosseum.

I'd like to see a modern reproduction of the Colosseum You mean Tennessee's doesn't remind you of the Colosseum?? Pshh. With that being said, I don't really like any of them. They look too much like something that walked out of a science fiction movie. The only one I like is B11; someone please tell me what B10 will be used for...I can't figure it out; and is it just me or does B04 look like a yacht?

Actually, B01 kind of reminds me of a girl I once dated. I think that ultimately 200,000 people got to got to have a direct experience of the games in her too.

"You mean Tennessee's doesn't remind you of the Colosseum??" I can't say as I've ever seen it, so no.

Good one smithers!

Shouldn't they be building this by now? There's only two years to go, after all. We'd all better hope they haven't hired the same building company that's doing Wembley.

I agree with grum that it would look cool to see B11 all lit up from the inside. I'm just not so sure I like the idea that all of the beams seem to be just put up anywhere the construction company felt like putting them. I have no doubt that the idea has been tested, but I wish it looked less like a birds nest and looked more stable.

Actually they should build two of them. B01 with B09 right next to it. They look like a happy couple to me.

B11 states that it is supposed to evoke a birds nest. To me it just looks like it is held together by duct tape... B12: well if it were Roswell NM, I would say go for it, is that a UFO or the roof?!?
