Coach of The Year: The coach of the year for the 2005- 2006 season is Avery Johnson of the Dallas Mavs. Does he really deserve this recognition, if not- who does?

Yea good points- I dont think that Avery should have been in the running. The Mavs were SUPPOSED to be in the playoffs- the Clippers weren't predicted to be on many peoples playoff brackets. *Mike Dunleavy- SHOULD be the Coach of The Year*

I have no problem with Avery Johnson winning this. I'm sorry, but the Pistons were the consensus choice to win the East - and they did. Show me who predicted that the Mavs would have the best record out West? Avery had them playing great basketball and used a Hubie-Brown-esque ten man rotation to do it. But coach of the year in the NBA is pretty much a farce. There are ten guys who could have been genuinely considered.

I agree with Weedy here. The Suns/Spurs were the consensus pre-season WC favorite. As for the Pistons, one might argue that their success is more tied to their front office than their coach at this point. Having said that, Saunders, D'Antoni, Dunleavy would all have been just as acceptable.

WeedyMcSmokey "Show me who predicted that the Mavs would have the best record out West? " No one really predicted that, and well it really didn't happen. As most people predicted, the Spurs have the best record in the West. Mike Dunleavy should had won it, no one really expected the Clippers to do anything.

johnson, d'antoni, dunleavy... these 3 could share it, no argument against them i can think of. saunders did a great job, but coaching an all-star team makes it a little easier for him than it was for the other guys.

Taking a bad team to the playoffs is an accomplishment, but I think Avery Johnson's a deserving winner because the Mavs are much better than they should be after losing Nash, losing Finley and gaining Dampier.

I don't agree with the choice, I think that Flipp Saunders should have won. Obviously the arguement against that is that he took a very good team and made it better, but he really improved the Pistons.
Isn't that sort of what Johnson did in Dallas, YYM? Still, not a bad selection at all. I've been impressed with the rise of the Clippers. Based on how the voting went last year, I wonder if Dallas can double-down like Phoenix did last year? Or is this their acknowledgement from the voters for their terrific season?

Are you kidding? Of course he deserved it? While a case can be made for Flip, he basically has the same guys and we all know the Pistons were going to hog the East. Avery's turned an offensive powerhouse into a good defensive squad. Kudos to the li'l General.

I also think that a better choice would have been the coach of the Clippers, seeing as they are the common dormat and now they're in the playoffs. Unlike the Mavs, the Clippers did not have proven playoff talent before this season. While Avery has done a good job, I don't think its been good enough for coach of the year.
