Close the Bung Hole: Player transfers in British soccer are often greased with the payment of bungs (bribes), Luton manager Mike Newell said. "People involved with the agents and doing the deals are taking back-handers," said Newell, who personally has been offered money. "If I was open to it, it would be a regular occurrence." In 1995, Arsenal manager George Graham was fired for taking £425,000 from a Norwegian agent to sign two of his clients.
I don't know how these euphemisms get started (for example: Who was the first person who said, "It's gonna be off the hook!" and why?), but there is no excuse for the phrase "greased with the payment of bungs" getting by. Who's the editor at the BBC, Butt-head ("Hey, Beavis! He said "greased bungs!")?

and I always thought the Italian Leagues were the most corrupt.... How do you say bung hole in Italian?

How do you say bung hole in Italian? I'm not sure skydivedad but I would think the second item listed is somehow involved. And then there's "If there has been wrong-doing it will be taken up." These English. They can be very funny with no effort at all.

I'll be interested to see whose names get dropped by Newell to compare their relative productivity on the pitch to others on the team or throughout the league. Newell alludes that those players are bunk (ha!): "So many players have come and gone who have been absolutely no good to the game or the clubs who bought them." Lots of corruption news flowing through the football world recently.

anytime you can work 'bung hole' into a link title, it is a great idea.
