That Nike shit is pretty impressive. For a terrible, child laboury crepulent organization, they sure do have a slick bunch of people in marketing.

I don't know about that Nike clip; I think it may be along the lines of the Powerade (or was it Gatorade?) commercial where Vick threw the football out of the stadium. Still pretty cool, nonetheless.

is that for real? if so...this guy is absolutely insane. i have never seen anything like that in life. maybe americans really are missing out on something with this soccer thing.

Yup it's real. Roberto Carlos, Brazil v France in Le Tournoi, 1997. (A mini tournament held before the World Cup in France to assess France's readyness to host the World Cup.) Probably the greatest free kick ever taken. On the basis of that one kick, the English media still believe Roberto Carlos was a great free kick taker, whereas in reality, his record was pretty mediocre.

"English media still believe Roberto Carlos was a great free kick taker"
Yeah, so does every FIFA video game created since then. Ridiculous.

A couple of months after Le Tournoi, Roberto Carlos scored for Real Madrid from somewhere out near the corner flag. I think this was a better goal. Generally, though, he needs to put his free kicks on target if he actually wants to score. Simple, really.

redsnare: I was going to say the same thing. Each time Roberto Carlos takes a free kick in Winning Eleven it looks exactly like that famous one.

The "nice shoes" link of Ronaldinho is a fake. Both Ronaldinho and Nike have admitted that it wasn't real. Players are capable of doing that stunt--kicking it off the crossbar and having it bounce back to them without hitting the ground--but nobody has done it that many times in a row... yet.

The Rooney goal was flat-out amazing, and that Ronaldo video...damn! I actually found myself feeling sorry for some of these guys; I can just see them after the match, sitting dejectedly with bags of ice on both ankles, just muttering the man's name, over and over. That's some hellacious video...thanks Snare, and Merry Christmas.

Trevor Sinclair's amazing scissors kick for QPR in 1997. Who are they playing against there?

And another: Tony Yeboah scores a belter for Leeds against Wimbledon, also in 1997.

that Ronaldo clip - i didn't watch it to the end. lots of fancy footwork that... stands up as fancy footwork and that's about it. and among the attempts on goal - a few crossbars, one that missed the top corner (ooooh, a miss!). he's got flashy footwork, i'll grant him that.

Sinclair's kick was against Barnsley in the FA Cup, if this page is to be believed.

Here's that Rooney goal again, but im arabic or something? Can't make out the language or the logo of the station in the corner. (I was just looking for a good clip of the "EPL commentator guy" (Not that I know WHO that is or if that specifies one person but I'd know him if I heard him) commentating a Rooney goal where we has the typical buildup and goes ROONEY! when he gets a touch and scores. 'cause my friends named their cat Rooney and that's how I hear it in my head.

I hate to be a pedant (well, no, that's not true, I clearly love it), but is no one else going to have a go at Kent Wu's revisionist approach to Maradona?
posted by JJ at 03:52 AM on December 23, 2005
It's about time Maradona was not only revised, but deconstructed.

I really like YouTube for the interface and user experience. You can just search on soccer and go wild from there. Having said that, redsnare rox! Thanks for the post!

The "nice shoes" one is obviously fake... The camera work gives it away. First of all, he's just sitting beside the pitch with his shoes untied, and then acts suprised to recieve the new shoes... Secondly, the Camera starts to pan out right before he starts whanging it off the cross-bar. The cones provide a marker point for the CG artist to combine the video of him kicking a ball, and it hitting the crossbar. My only concern is as companies start doing more and more of these types of things, will it come to the point where the real feats these men can do pales in comparison??

Open thread for any other good soccer/football videos out there; I'm sick of trolling google video and metacafe for these.
