Robby Gordon’s Helmet to Assist Hurricane Katrina Victims: Gordon and his helmet gained national attention when it was thrown at the car of Michael Waltrip in a sign of obvious frustration after Waltrip wrecked the No. 7 car driven by Gordon under caution. The helmet will be auctioned off on eBay with bids now being accepted. The auction will last for one week, and the helmet going to the highest bidder on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. (EDT).

Last tie I saw it, the bid was over $60K. Someone's gonna have to get a second mortgage on the trailer home. baaaa zingggg!

$133,100 now, still with over 6 days left. Methinks someone's going to get stiffed (and I don't mean Jeff Gordon).

$133,000????? The only rednecks with that kind of money are Jeff Foxworthy and Britney Spears. Did they have a bidding war?

Don't forget Kim Basinger.

Wow, I'm not a NASCAR fan, but you all come off as a bunch of racists for your comments about the fans of NASCAR. Make fun of the sport, but not it's supporters. Your attempts to belittle them has merely made you all look small-minded and mean-spirited. Besides, Robbie is an off-road racer first and a NASCAR driver second.

Are NASCAR fans black? People might be class-ist or snobbish or lots of things for looking down on NASCAR fans, but I don't see how race enters into it, you damn Nazi. Yes, that last part is a joke.

i took "bunch of racists" as a pun. what with our lance armstrong threads and such.

Some of the NASCAR today crack me up. They show up on the scene and automatically start making spectacles of themselves. They intentionally wreck someone, walk back on the track and throw their helmets at other cars, etc. I wish the drivers from past decades were still around. They knew they had to prove something (win) in the sport before they started going off half-cocked like some of today's racers. Bumping and hard racing used to be an accepted part of the sport. Now these guys are out there acting like they were recruited due to their road rage, not their race skills. That race last week was ridiculous. Except for a few of the oldtimers, there's nobody on the curcuit remotely likeable for a combination of personality and driving skills. I wish the stars would all align and Rusty Wallace could come out of this thing with the title. And, for the record, if Dale Earnhardt Jr. was named Dale Peterson, he wouldn't even have a ride. OVERRATED!!!

Oh yeah, back to the point. If anyone's stupid enough to pay that much for the thing, hopefully it benefits the intended charity well.

posted by dyams at 08:56 AM on September 21, 2005

Dyams do you think the drivers from past decades never threw helmets or wrecked each other. You obviously haven't been following NASCAR very long. Yea Gordon (actually both of them) is an ass but fights and such is part of NASCAR. No attempt by the higher ups to make it prettier for TV will change that.

Bugsyduke, here's a great link you might want to try: Thesaurus.com. Because, y'know, the more you know. As for roping NASCAR funs, it's in good fun. Like counting their teeth or guessing how many El Caminos they have on blocks in their front yards.

if they auctioned off used used condoms from queer eye all you nascar haters could get excited.

So he decided to auction off his helmet for a noble cause. That is commendable, but, he's still a little fucking prick who needs to quit his whining and go back to open-wheel. Ain't that right, Michael?

do you think the drivers from past decades never threw helmets or wrecked each other I never said that at all. All I said (or meant) was drivers coming up in this era are all one big lump of driving mediocrity, with no real respect for each other. The drivers who EARNED the respect a few years back weren't the ones some of these young nitwits would ever throw helmets at. Could you imagine Dale Sr. bumping someone and Davey Allison coming out and driving right up on his hood? Bumping and hard racing used to be an accepted part of the sport That's what I said above. There's a difference between that and the crap that went on last weekend.

do you think the drivers from past decades never threw helmets or wrecked each other Case in point: 1979 Daytona 500, Cale Yarborough & Bobby Allison duking it out in the infield after wrecking each other on lap 200. Now THAT was the golden age of stock car racing, when the cars actually looked stock, when men were men and sheep were nervous.

Do people still call other people Yankees? I dunno, but if I weren't so lazy (and last year didn't ruin it), I'd have made millions with my shirt idea: Front: Yankees Suck! Back: And I'm not that fond of the South, neither.

The Yankees even get dogged in NASCAR threads. What a team! They transcend all sports.

eBay pulls Gordon helmet after bids top $10 million

posted by justgary at 03:11 PM on September 21, 2005

They probably ran credit checks on the previous 20 bidders and found none had an annual yearly income over $8,000.00.

posted by dyams at 03:33 PM on September 21, 2005

Actually, dyams, they pulled it when the high bidder promised to pay in food stamps and nightcrawlers.

posted by wfrazerjr at 03:53 PM on September 21, 2005

tsk, tsk, tsk, I forgot, some people need a group to hate, only way they can feel good about themselves (or their income bracket, or the number of teeth they have,...) Heck, we can't defame the jews or blacks anymore, how 'bout queers and NASCAR fans.

posted by bugsyduke at 04:27 PM on September 21, 2005

If you can find a queer NASCAR fan, maybe our heads will explode. Personally, as a New Englander, I'm offended and want my word "queer" back. You're usage is wicked kuh-weah. I do love the idea you're coming to the defense of both groups you mention.
