Not the kind of firsts they wanted: : US men lose an exhibition game to Italy, 95-78 -- first ever loss in an exhibition game and most lopsided defeat since they started using NBA players.

In every sappy sports movie I've seen, they have to lose their first game. Then this ragtag group of ballers will finally begin to gel from Larry Brown's unorthodox teaching methods, culminating in the ultimate defeat of their arch rivals at Cobra Kai Karate School.

Sure, Stan. But first Tatum O'Neal has to somehow start at center, and they might want to replace Larry Brown with Bill Murray, who might not know squat about b-ball but he can sure give a mean halftime speech.

... in the ultimate defeat of their arch rivals at Cobra Kai Karate School. I thought it was the Soviet hockey team.

And they can practive waxing their $$$$$ cars on and off in the meantime to learn ball-handling skills.

Bill Murray knows plenty about B-Ball, he co-starred with MJ and BB in Space Jam!

...MJ and BB... See how you had to spell Bill Murray's name out? With the true greats, like BB and MJ, you don't have to say anything. We just know who they are. Two letters is plenty. Bill Murray, not so much. I mean, jeez. He didn't even stay for the second Charlie's Angels movie, fergodsake. How good can he be? (Although I don't remember Barry Bonds, Bobby Brown or Billy Barty actually being in Space Jam, still, I'm with you, BST. *winks, makes the cocking-gun thing with his fingers*)

What did they expect? Remember the last time a few of these guys got together and tried to play defense?

And the contention will continue as the team wins only one of four at home, and drops the first game in the Soviet Union. They'll redeem themselves by grinding out close victories in the next few games, but the series is won by Paul Henderson's goal with 34 seconds left in the final game.

See how you had to spell Bill Murray's name out? Well, if it helps, I ALWAYS think "BM" when I think of Bill Murray...

good ol' BM. Can't go more than a day without ya.

Garf, you need to watch Lost in Translation, after which you will have no trouble going several days without.

you didn't like Bill's performance? LIT was the anti-oscar picture of the year, imho. and I was actually referencing an acronym my mother uses when she takes her dog for a walk.

Bill Murray was great in Lost in Translation, but I think my fascination with the movie has a lot to do with Scarlett Johansson. Those lips! LIT is one of those films people seem to love or hate... I liked the music, the way I got a look at Japanese culture, the unrequited love(?), Bill Murray's exchange with the poker-faced sushi chef... I could go on.

The USA Men's basketball team beat Germany. Barely, but they won.

Bear in mind that it was a last second three-pointer from midcourt and Germany didn't even qualify for the Olympics this year. Things aren't looking too promising for the Dream Team.

garfield, dusted, put me down in the hate camp. Sure there were some funny bits, always are in a Murray movie, but overall I thought it was amateur hour and not in a good way.

The final straw for me were the mic in view behind BM's head and the fake elevator. Sofia, sweetie, your Dad's a great and professional director, your cousin is a top star and producer and yet you couldn't manage the simple bits?

'Sfunny: we had a 50/50 split here on the couch when we watched it. I loved it. Best moment was Bill Murray's response to why Asians interchange "R" and "L": "For laughs . . . we're not cracking them up." As for the boom mic . . .

I was just reading an article somewhere (metafilter, boingboing?) saying that boom mics showing up in the film are usually the fault of the projectionist, not the filmmaker. Like I said, there are no fence-straddlers with this one... love or hate. OK - found it: Ask Metafilter thread about boom mics showing up in The Village.

I didn't see LiT in a college campus theater, I paid real money. The studio spends several million dollars to make these films, as far as I'm concerned they can spend a few more and get this shit right.

Just today I was talking with a friend who declared "there is not point to watching Olympic basketball because we always win." I think this year, he'll have a reason to watch.
