Marge Schott has died. The former Reds owner was infamous for cheapness, racial remarks, and some of the strange things she did to her players, such as making them curb her dog.

on espn, she's still on life support. stupid FCC and their 5 second delay! but, given her reputation is a "Ding dong the witch is dead!" out of line?

That was the coldest eulogy I think I've ever read. I haven't thought about Marge in a long, long time. Probably won't again for a long, long time.

It's always sad when anyone dies. I think I'll leave it at that.

what an odd rhyme, yet as refreshing as a public protest chant.

If people are being harsh about Marge Schott, I think it's one of those situations where you get back what you give:

April 1, 1996: At Riverfront Stadium, umpire John McSherry calls time from behind the plate and collapses on the field with a massive heart attack and dies. The popular McSherry, a veteran of 21 seasons, had been suffering from a series of medical problems, aggravated by his weight of 328 pounds. The game, just seven pitches old between the Reds and Expos, is called, though owner Marge Schott feels otherwise: "Snow this morning and now this. I don't believe it. I feel cheated. This isn't supposed to happen to us, not in Cincinnati. This is our history, our tradition, our team. Nobody feels worse than me." Schott, who will later apologize, says it with flowers instead. But the Dayton Daily News will report on the 28th that the flowers she sends were given to her by television station covering the Reds.
She was a loathsome person who did a terrific job of hiding any good qualities she might have possessed.

"only fruits wear earrings" Is it wrong to speculate on which side of Purgatory she ended up?

Rcade, I had that very section loaded up for dropping in here. The only redeeming thing to ever come out of her was that the Bob & Tom radio show got to do a great running segment with her entitled "Smoke 'Em If Ya Got 'Em", with an inpersonator interviewing famous celebrities Larry King style. Good stuff.

On the plus side, when she sold the Reds she gave the majority of her money to the community, showing she wasn't all bad.

>"she gave the majority of her money to the community" That sounds similar to the late Harold Ballard, former owner of the Maple Leafs, noted for questionable activities and comments but also supporter of the March Of Dimes: "one of the most philanthropic individuals of his time." It seems contradictory, to be mean-spirited but also giving, but it also seems common.

I've never known her, I've never heard a kind word about her. I've never liked her. Bye, Marge.

Well, as a cincinnatian I think I saw more of the good she did; Tax records reveal that Schott donated millions of dollars to charities that help educate, nurture and provide children with a safe place to play. St. Ursula Academy, the Dan Beard Boy Scout Council, St. Rita School for the Deaf, the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families and the Greater Cincinnati Girls and Boys Club: From a slightly nicer obit She also use to be attractive. Man, I feel so dirty saying that.

Thanks for the links mick. I guess she just had a disdain for professional ball players.

Here's a fitting obit in the Enquirer. The Cincinnati Enquirer's section on Marge. Many a nice thing said by Eric Davis and Dave Parker, who Marge once refered to as her "Million Dollar Niggers."
