The Lions just snapped a 24-year losing streak at Lambeau, a streak that was mentioned approximately seventeen thousand times over the course of the telecast.

The last time Detroit beat Green Bay on the road:

  • Fifteen percent of the current Lions roster had not been born.
  • HC Jim Caldwell was the QB coach at Penn State, where his third-string redshirt freshman QB was Kerry Collins, who would go on to play 16 seasons and go to two Pro Bowls before retiring from the NFL.
  • OC Jim Bob Cooter was seven years old.
  • Owner Martha Firestone Ford had been eligible for Social Security for a year and a half.

  • I want NFL Red Zone Guy Scott Hanson to moderate a presidential debate. He'd keep things moving. The second an answer got dull he'd cut out.

Coughlin handed that game to the Patriots. First and goal and three straight throws? Run the ball. Run the ball. Run the ball. Kick!

So my oldest kid just asked what the Pats-Giants result was, and I told him Pats by a point. He asked whether it was overtime, and I told him no, it was regulation, and that a team could not win an NFL game in overtime by 1 point. But then I got to thinking:

If the game had ended in a tie and the Giants got the ball first and got a field goal, the Patriots would have the opportunity to score a touchdown. Brady takes them all the way down the field, but Brandon Meriweather picks him off in the end zone. Meriweather then inexplicably doesn't take a knee, but steps out of the end zone, realizes his mistake, and takes a step back and then takes a knee-- all under his own power.

That would be a safety for the Patriots, but the game would be over and the Giants would win by one, right?

Based on some of the calls Ed Hochuli made during the game, I'm compelled to quote from the tune Joel Mabus wrote about his cat:

My kitty cat has her favorite chair
Where she sits to lick her hair.
Sometimes she just sit and stare
At things that are not really there.

Etrigan: Looks like a one-point win to me.

some of the calls Ed Hochuli made during the game

At one point in the second half the TV cameras were on Belichick as he was quite heatedly engaging Hochuli in conversation. I don't know what was being said, but I did notice that the calls began to get a bit more even afterwards. I know that referees are supposedly immune to the diatribes that are often directed their way, but the coincidence causes some question in my mind.

Yes, that would be a one-point win.

If it was the CFL, you could win by one point with a rouge (kick through the end zone). This, of course, is what sometimes makes the end of CFL games a crazy affair.

A game being called evenly is suspicious?

What was the rule applied on the last Giants TD / no -TD?

Catch an control, 2 feet down in end zone before the ball was pried loose. It would seem that the ruling would be similar to that of a catch and control, 2 feet in before going out of bounds. Is the rule different if a receiver stays in bounds?

Why can't you just try to return a missed field goal for a touchdown, you know, like normal people? I don't even know what I've just watched there.

On the Giants non-TD, Beckham's second foot wasn't down before the ball was pried loose -- he was bringing it down at the same time it was being knocked out. That was a close call but I think the refs got it right.

Either Coughlin just has Belichek's number or Mr. Hoodie deliberately plays it close with the Giants (especially when they're having a bad season) to annoy the hapless Jets.

Don't forget that Belichick was the NYG defensive coordinator when Coughlin had the offense. They know each other well, have their teams try to play the same way (physical, grinding football when possible), and both are very detailed in their preparation. It's not a surprise that the two teams have such close games.
