Semi-regular update: Julio Franco is still playing baseball.:
Julio Franco was teammates with Hall-of-Famer Phil Niekro (born in 1939) and current all-star Carlos Gomez (born in 1985).

From Baseball Think Factory:

Julio Franco's debut as a pro baseball player is closer to Pearl Harbor than it is today.

Julio Franco has been alive during most of the World Series. He is only four months younger than Major League Baseball being played in California. He is exactly as old as the FAA, older than the integrated circuit and the John Birch Society.

Damn. And he's 5 months younger than me.

Julio Franco played with Mike Hargrove. Hargrove retired, became a manager, and then retired as a manager, and Franco was still playing in the majors.

In one of those "who would have guessed", two titans of baseball longevity, Julio Franco & Nolan Ryan, never faced each other in a real MLB game.

Yeah, but they were teammates for several years and the time before that was chalked up to no inter-league play.

I've always loved Julio. I hope he keeps on keeping on for as long as he can.

And also played for Mike Hargrove!

If anyone remembers, Julio Franco was with the Phillies. He was involved in one of the worse trades we ever made. I can't remember the name of the bum we got for Franco and four other players. That's just how good he was.

Von Hayes, who wasn't really a bum. And they sold high on a couple of the other players in the deal. Impressively, Manny Trillo generated 11.1 WAR in 17 seasons (or as Mike Trout calls it, "2012").

Me too. How many get the chance to play for as long as he has? Heck, how many have the same career for this long? And it seems he's done with without chemical enhancement as well.

When he started his MLB career, General Francisco Franco had only still been dead for seven years.

When he started his professional baseball career, actor James Franco wasn't born yet.

When he started his professional baseball career, Franco American Spaghetti still had another 2 decades of brand life left.

To be frank, Oprah's net worth was about $6 when Julio took his first at-bat.

Hey, he's only 18 years younger than I. Why shouldn't he be on the field? I can still work as an umpire, although it's at a level considerably below what Franco does. It's still baseball, still a sport that can be played/officiated by people of all ages, and still a lot of fun.
