SportsFilter: The Friday Huddle:

A place to discuss the sports stories that aren't making news, share links that aren't quite front-page material, and diagram plays on your hand. Remember to count to five Mississippi before commenting in anger.

This was sent to me as a joke, because it's funny watching Youtube's new auto-caption feature trying to make head or tail of the guy's accent, but I think it's a good and funny watch, even without the subtitled hilarity.

NSFW Warning : Irish people, using several words you shouldn't use on TV.

Dying here, though it would be funnier if youtube's captions didn't look like a random Markov generator reading marketing pamphlets throughout.

"Mark it down, you fookin' eejit!" At one point, youtube mentioned something about a racist washing machine. I feel like the captions might be transcribed from a madman's notebooks.

Can't bring up the subtitles; urgently reaching for a disposable protective undergarment nonetheless.

Pleeeze, pleeeze, pleeeze don't make me link to the cussing Scottish parrot.

That is a thing of beauty. Those guys are having a ball. Rally car drivers do have life figured out.

"Chicken chicken toothpaste" should go into some sort of misheard lyrics hall of fame.

Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain --- unless you are an Irish rally driver and navigator having as good time as these 2 are. Great stuff, Mr. B.

I couldn't watch that the whole way through because the tears of laughter quite literally became too much to see through. Will return to it later and save it for when I need a pick-me-up. Hopefully, YouTube will never improve their tech support for their auto-translate feature.

CBC Hockey Night In Canada Panel: NHL shouldn't suspend Gryba

posted by tommybiden at 03:37 PM on May 03, 2013

And the NHL disagrees, 2 games for Gyrba. This hit gets one game.

posted by tommybiden at 04:03 PM on May 03, 2013

It's a classic results-oriented suspension - the hit on Eller was a lot less a direct target for the head than Ference, but because Eller hit the ice and there was blood everywhere, the NHL tries to protect its reputation as doing something about violence by punishing Gyrba more.

If the NHL wants to outlaw hits on defenceless players, it should just do that - but the system they have now sits a guy who aimed at the head less than one who incidentally hit it - and that's not going to achieve very good results.

All words you hear from him are lies!

LIES!

It's 20 years ago this month when, and I say this with no hint of hyperbole, that helmet-haired devil perpetuated the single greatest act of evil in the history of the universe!)

grum -- maybe this will make you feel better.

Only time I think I have ever seen Nicklas Lidstrom (who was 23 at the time) exhibit poor defensive technique. I recall a number of commentators suggesting at the time that he was too "soft "(i.e., European) to be an effective NHL defenseman.

holden, that was a nice trip down memory lane. Can you dig up clips of the Wings losing to San Jose in 94, too? Oh, and fuck you, by the way... =D

grum, get over it. It was game 6. The Leafs still had game 7, at home. It didn't cost them the series any more than Buckner cost the Red Sox...

What has come since has been worth it, no? I was at Game 6 of the 1994 Wings-Sharks series in Detroit. 7-1!!! No way they lose Game 7, right? Oh, Chris Osgood (at least he eventually redeemed himself).

I'm REALLY unhappy about this. They have great chemistry and their 30-so-episode podcast has been hilarious.

Hey, man, I know. I came of age in central Michigan on late 80s to early 90s Wings. But I am more at peace with the travails of the past now. Age and 4 Cups, I suppose.
