Can you build a team's fan culture in less than one year? Well, the Wanderers have, and they're in the final on Sunday.

/Although the first game of football in western Sydney was played in 1880, so that's a while waiting for a team to support.

Update on the Boston Marathon bombing story: it was a hot time in Watertown last night.

Read up on some A-League history the other day and apparently the initial plan was to have the Sydney team based in the western Sydney area.

Then the FFA president at the time pulled a fast one, got his son awarded control of the Sydney franchise ahead of the regional governing body and the team moved east.

Still, a big surprise to see an expansion team win the regular season and have a decent shot at the Toilet Bowl. I'll be watching tomorrow night.

At the Stars/Blues game, the capture of the second suspect was announced -- presumably on the jumbotron. The St. Louis crowd went bonkers and then started chanting "USA!"

I saw a comment on Facebook yesterday that the guy should hope that law enforcement finds him before a bunch of guys from "Southie" (South Boston) do. He got his wish. It's nice to know that people outside Boston care that much about this.

Jean Segura steals first base!

At the beginning of the play:

Segura on 2nd base (single and stole 2nd base).
Braun on 1st base.

Sequence of events:

  • Segura gets caught stealing, but before being tagged out, he retreats back to 2nd base.

  • Braun had already advanced to 2nd base, and was standing on it when Segura got back there.

  • The third baseman, having chased Segura all the way back, tags Segura and Braun (who are both touching 2nd base at the time).

  • The umpire (correctly) rules Braun out (trailing runner on a double-occupied base is out unless it's a force play).

  • Segura, not seeing the call, feels himself being tagged, and figures HE'S the one that is out. He gets up, and starts to trot towards the dugout.

  • About halfway there, someone clues him in that BRAUN is out. However, he can't run back to second...that's where the ball is and he'll be tagged out.

  • He continues to run towards first and stands there.

Side note: Later that inning, he gets tagged out trying to (re-)steal 2nd base.

Like I always say, law enforcement/responders/military and professional major league athletes should swap salaries.

Sequence of events...

But... how do you mark that in the book?

But... how do you mark that in the book?

Well, Baseball-Reference doesn't have a code for "retreats to first base", so everything lists him as being caught stealing 3rd base later that inning (even though it really was 2nd base...again).

However, it does suggest something is amiss as he's caught stealing 3rd...with a throw from the catcher to 2nd baseman:

So did Segura barely miss out on being the first player to steal second base twice in one trip around the bases?
