In other news, they don't wear cups in hockey either.

Bet he does now.

He probably doesn't need to now.

Hockey will shortly be in the rear view mirror. He's got a whole new career to look forward to, singing choral music overseas.

Sportsfilter book club recommendation: I just finished Among the Thugs and while I thoroughly enjoyed it, all I can say is, "Holy. Crap."

Not sure if Mike Milbury is GM of the Islanders again, but they just traded for Tim Thomas.

Thomas will be miserable in Nassau County. When the anticipated breakdown in social order arrives, the only sure way to evacuate will be by sea.

Unless he heads out to Orient or Montauk and decides to dig in.

That's going to help the Islanders get to the cap floor, gives the Bruins some cap space. New York's not out any money, unless of course Tin Foil Timmy reports.

Bummer, Barnes and Noble doesn't have it in epub format.

How about this: "With his 25,000 points, 10,000 boards, 5,000 assists 1,500 blocks and steals, Kevin Garnett joins...no one. He's all alone."

Damn, that's impressive. Imagine what he could've done with a token year playing college hoops.

(Honestly not sure if sarcastic or not)

Garnett is one of the very few players who was truly NBA ready out of high school.

And really, how much better prepared are the current 1 and dones coming out of programs like Kentucky? It's the players that stay in college for 3 or 4 years in legitimate programs that develop.

I thought the Islanders moved to Brooklyn? Which is, technically, still part of an island despite the natives disputing it at every turn. Unless you mean the borough is part of Manhattan Island, that would satisfy a bunch of the newer residents.

"With his 25,000 points, 10,000 boards, 5,000 assists 1,500 blocks and steals, Kevin Garnett joins...no one. He's all alone."

NBA only:

25,000 points = ~16th all time (KG is 16th)
10,000 rebounds = ~34th all time (KG is 12th)
5,000 assists = ~56th all time (KG is 51st)
1,500 blocks = ~31st all time (KG is 19th)
1,500 steals = ~39th all time (KG is 17th)

Points is the bare minimum, while assists is also pretty close.
This would suggest some selective endpoint manipulation. Let's examine what happens if you drop a statistic.

If you drop steals, the list includes Garnett and:
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1160 steals)

If you drop blocks, the list includes Garnett and:
Karl Malone (1145 blocks)

If you drop assists, the list includes Garnett and:
Hakeem Olajuwon (3058 assists)

If you drop rebounds, the list includes Garnett and:
no one else.

If you drop points, the list includes Garnett and:
no one else.

In fact, if you drop BOTH points and rebounds, Garnett is still the only one to meet the other three endpoints (assists, blocks, steals).

Selective endpoint rating: Acceptable

Conclusion: Given the list of players that make would join Garnett if you dropped specific statistical endpoints, and the fact that there really are two statistics that really were extraneous (points and rebounds), it is very impressive career feat for Garnett.

I thought the Islanders moved to Brooklyn?

Have to check on that - thought it was going to be in a year or so, depending on the existing Nassau County arena lease.

The Islanders are scheduled to move to the Barclays Center in 2015 when their lease at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum expires.

Son and I were at the game last night. When the announcement was made about Garnett's 25K points, the Garden crowd stood and started applauding. It went on for the full duration of the lengthy (Thanks, TNT) time out, and it only slowed down after Garnett acknowledged the ovation with a wave or 2. If Danny Ainge were to announce a trade of Garnett in the next few days, he'd better do it from a bunker in the Bahamas.

Thanks for the numbers, grum. 25K points by itself is impressive enough by itself, but the rest of the numbers in context with the points are truly staggering.

But are there ever a lot of teams contending that could use Garnett's grit and leadership, like ALL of them.
