The New Orleans Hornets are changing their names to the Pelicans: Look at the Pelican fly, come on Pelican!

Hopefully this means that Charlotte will get their Hornets name back. After all, it's a well-deserved named for the city.

If there was any justice in the world, New Orleans would have gotten the Jazz name back.

I hope the Myrtle Beach Pelicans seek an injunction.

Jordan wants the Hornets name back, so he said.

This Pelican thing just makes me think of all the oil soaked shorebirds after the BP oil rig blowout. Maybe Dawn detergent can become a sponsor.

What ought to happen is the Hornets name goes back to NC, the Jazz name goes back to New Orleans, and Mark Eaton's old team gets renamed the Utah Salty Lakers.

Or Rock Goblins, Arches, Mesas, Buttes, something...

Or we let Dennis Rodman name the team.

A wonderful bird is the pelican, His bill will hold more than his belly can He can take in his beak Food enough for a week, But I'm damned if I see how the hell he can Dixon Lanier Merritt

Our beloved, endangered brown pelicans have a never-ending struggle to survive. Pelicans have been my inspiration. I've wanted to retire, but I can't I promised them I'd help them. They have had such a hard life, and they still do. Karen Benzel

OK, enough pelican quotes. The name's not bad for New Orleans, but the Jazz name should go to Memphis, although Blues would fit better. Utah could be called The Golden Spikes, but that would better fit a volleyball team or the Gronkowski brothers.

And the Lakers back to Minneapolis.

And destroy the jazz scene in Utah? Not worth it.

I used to pine for that, but at this point I'm so deep into a hopeless, codependent relationship with the Timberwolves that I think LA can just keep the name.

Lakers back to Minneapolis

Then L.A. could make a little coaching change and rename the team the Jackson 5.

Sad note: there are little kids growing up today that think that the Sonics are nothing more than a couple of tools sitting in their car in the drive through fighting over some crispy fries.

Well, in the words of the immortal Irwin M. "Fletch" Fletcher, I believe Louisiana is the Pelican State.

At last; a professional team in New Orleans that can flip the bird to its fans, and nobody will care.
