SportsFilter: The Saturday Huddle:
A place to discuss the sports stories that aren't making news, share links that aren't quite front-page material, and diagram plays on your hand. Remember to count to five Mississippi before commenting in anger.
No offense intended, Folkways, but I would much, much rather we limit discussion of the Sandusky issue to its impact on sports. I've been incredibly uncomfortable seeing the coverage of a vicious and evil crime limited to the sports pages and being consistently near the tops of those.
How this affects Penn State recruiting? Sure. Whether the athletic department and NCAA engender an atmosphere of willful ignorance that leads to this sort of thing? Absolutely. But we're well beyond those discussions into simple criminal matters, and the fact that he was formerly involved in sports doesn't (or shouldn't) make it a sports story.

Guys, it was nice catch and all but you're getting a little creepy about it.

My apologies Etrigan, and I agree with your statement. Having not followed the case, it startled me this morning to learn the trial was not only held but over with.

Etrigan: you're right, this case has been much discussed in sports pages as well as in SpoFi. But now with Sandusky's conviction, the way has been paved for his victims to tap into a considerable sum of Penn St.'s coffers through civil litigation, which will continue to change and evolve (or devolve, if you prefer) the school and its athletic programs for many years to come, including and especially its football program. This story isn't over yet, but at least we can now put the topic of Sandusky's crimes to bed permanently (though I'm sure a September huddle will provide a link to the article that details the sentence he gets from the judge).

I'm glad Sandusky was convicted and hope he never sees daylight again, because if he's ever freed he will go back to "tickling" children. The way he acts gives me no confidence at all he recognizes that what he's done is monstrous.
I hope there's a lot more investigation into the cover up at Penn State.

Day two of the NHL brother reunion weekend: the Schenn's get together.
And yet another Sutter joins the NHL family. The original six Sutter brothers now have five of their sons drafted by the NHL as well. Only two have made it to the show so far (Brandon, Brett)

So ironic to think back to the 1987 Fiesta Bowl having been so heavily hyped before the fact and remembered after the fact as a battle between good and evil in light of what has unfolded over the last half a year in State College. And will continue to unfold.
