SportsFilter: The Tuesday Huddle:
A place to discuss the sports stories that aren't making news, share links that aren't quite front-page material, and diagram plays on your hand. Remember to count to five Mississippi before commenting in anger.
Think of the ransom that a proven but never injured Chad Pennington would command in today's NFL marketplace.

Amazing Sports montage. Use the link in the article. If you have not seen it before, there is some awesome footage.

The video has come up a couple of times on Sportsfilter:
After obsessing about it for a day or so, I had posted the best information I could put together for the clips in the Sportsfilter Wiki. This was updated by intrepid folk over time.
I'd love it if it's revived 5 years later and see if the remaining holes in the clips can be filled in.
Or even better, the information for the clips we have identified would be expanded.
I've watched the video so many times that it's gotten to the point where if I hear the song, I will get teary-eyed when I recognize the audio cue for the specific scenes (and I will mentally insert the breaks for specific clips, like Doug Flutie, or Wayne Gretzky).

A Northern Illinois linebacker has been charged with felonious assault for running over University of Toledo band members as he came out onto the field after halftime of a game last season. A video shows player Jamaal Bass hitting the second of the band members and the first one standing back up.

There should be no circumstances under which one can end up being convicted of sexual assault on teenage boys three times. Three!

The sports montage was great, many memories some good some not so good, I saw a lot of things I remember seeing on TV when they happened, from my childhood and up. Thanks for the link.

Just wait.
Local news media reports that James is sentenced to 2 years on each case to be served concurrently, which in Canadian law means he'll be back on the streets by December 2012. If he chooses to appeal he's eligible for bail as early as tomorrow.
During the trial James' lawyer produced written character references from underage boys he had "befriended" in foreign countries since his pardon who considered him a mentor and a role model; he apparently was helping them financially.

What a fucking joke.

grum - just had a look through the Wiki for the montage. Some expansions, a confirmation and a correction below:
2:44 - CORRECTION - it is Payne Stewart, but it's him holing the winning putt at the US Open in 1999 at Pinehurst, not the Ryder Cup later that year at Brookline. The moment is now immortalised by a bronze statue at the club. He died later that year when the private plane he was in lost cabin pressure, killing everyone on board.
3:38 - EXPANSION - Watson's caddie (Bruce Edwards) said to him before the shot, "Just get it close" and Watson replied, "Get it close, hell. I'm going to sink it."
3:58 - CONFIRMATION - That was Agassi moments after winning Wimbledon for the first time in 1992 (his first grand slam). He beat Ivanisevic in the final in five sets.
4:50: - EXPANSION - Jack Nicklaus holing his birdie putt at the 17th at Augusta on his way to shooting 30 on the back nine to win his final (18th) professional major title, and his 6th Masters. Sports journalist Thomas Boswell remarked: "Some things cannot possibly happen, because they are both too improbable and too perfect. The U.S. hockey team cannot beat the Russians in the 1980 Olympics. Jack Nicklaus cannot shoot 65 to win The Masters at age 46. Nothing else comes immediately to mind."
6:21: - EXPANSION - Tiger Woods celebrating after a hole-in-one at the 16th hole at TPC Scotsdale in the 1997 Phoenix Open. He would go on to win his first Masters (and first professional major) three months later.

JJ: Please update the wiki with that info. That's the sort of thing it should have.

In a lovely sports crossover moment today, one of my friends in England sent me a text that said "The Dolphins have signed Gerrard!"
That'd be an unexpected move for Liverpool's Captain, but he does like to make 50 yard passes to no one in particular, so it'd not be too different from when Henne was there.
