Chiefs Fire Todd Haley: The Kansas City Chiefs have axed head coach Todd Haley after the team fell to 5-8 and lost five of its last six games. Haley was 19-27 in his third season and led the team to the 2010 AFC West title.
I don't think this is a good job. Pioli hasn't really done much to improve this team, and the Cassel contract was and is ridiculous.

Weis supposedly hated being there for the one year he was on board. Maybe this move is what the situation needed.
Perhaps every team should let a coach or two go right before they play the Packers. That way, there's a reason for the ensuing blowout that fans can understand and accept.
It would be great if the Chiefs could beat the Pack. One, to get that undefeated thing out of the way, and two, because it would be such big news, it would push St. Timothy off the front page of the sports section for a minute.

Coaching changes are things that I only ever pay attention to when its effecting a team I follow, so it dawns on me that I know absolutely nothing about the considerations that go into selecting a new coach. Anyone able to offer me a primer?

Belichick's former assistants are always sure-fire success stories.

If it were the college game, you could get off to a good start by looking up Chuck Neinas.
I don't think there is a comparable kingmaker in the pro game.
It might be a good idea to prepare for coaching changes the way you would prepare for an emergency in the wake of a natural disaster.
As in: "so many jobs are opening up that someone is going to end up hiring Wade Phillips".
That's when you check to make sure that you've got your inflatable kayak all set to go and three weeks worth of MRE's on hand.

One way to prepare for how well a new coach is going to do is to see what the team owner has to say when the hire is announced.
If the owner says something along the lines of: "ten minutes into the interview I knew he was my guy", then you know you're in DelRio and Crennel territory.

Just heard on the sportsyak radio station in San Diego that they're looking at Wade Phillips for the next head coach here. Guh.
