Canucks One Win From Hoisting Stanley Cup: The Vancouver Canucks won a 1-0 nailbiter over the Boston Bruins in game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, giving them a 3-2 series lead. Max Lapierre scored the only goal in the third. NESN broadcaster and former NHL exec Mike Millbury called the Sedin twins "Thelma and Louise" during Boston's game 4 broadcast, drawing this response from their teammate Cory Schneider: "Who cares what he thinks? If he'd been their general manager he would have traded them in their first year, anyway, like he did with everyone else."

Daniel Sedin had an interesting response to Milbury's "Thelma and Louise" crack on TV after the game. Paraphrased from memory it was something like "It doesn't bother us, we've been called worse. But Thelma and Louise are women, right? I don't know how woman feel about it. It tells you something about how Milbury thinks about women. If I was I woman I might be pretty mad."

I thought, holy #$%, Feminist Analysis from an NHL player. Bring it on.

Heh, that's a great response from Schneider.

We're just as bad as mainstream media.

Luongo has to be the most maddening player in all of hockey. He starts the series with a shutout and then gives up 12 goals in games 3 and 4. Then he comes back with another shutout. He did it against Chicago, going up three, then getting pulled twice in three straight losses, then having a stellar game 7.

I still like Boston's chances. They've dominated at home and lost on the road in close games decided on fluky plays. They've held the best PP team in the league to 1 goal in 26 chances. They've neutralized the Sedins. If they had a PP that was merely bad instead of abysmal, they could well have won this in 5 (being 0-6 in game 1, and 0-4 last night before Vancouver even had a PP).

If they can get it to game 7, anything can happen.

He might be, and then he might be pretty much used to the fact that popular culture uses words meaning and associated with women to describe any trait or behavior that is weak, whining, cowardly, incompetent or mentally unbalanced. Until the larger society stops considering all of those things to be synonymous with women, the sports world will continue to use "woman" and all of its variants as slurs.

Here's Henrik and Daniel's reaction, pretty funny really.

"By all means, stay on Thelma and Louise, I mean Henrik and Daniel," said Milbury, referring to the characters in the movie of the same name starring Susan Sarandon and Gina Davis.

Henrik Sedin heard about it from his son.

"That wasn't too much fun," he said following last night's 1-0 Canucks victory over the Bruins in Game 5. "My son told me a man was making fun of me and Uncle Danny on TV. I said that can't be true because that's what usually happens in kindergarten. That's what happened. Sometimes grown-ups have low self-esteem and get on guys and say stupid stuff.

"I think he has to be happy with his career," Henrik added. "He did a great job on Long Island. I'm sure he is happy with that."

Zing.

"Usually, the guys who sit in those situations, they're called experts," said Daniel. "They're there for a reason, I think. We don't really worry about those kind of comments. He made a bad comment about us, calling us women. I don't know how he looks at women. I would be pretty mad if I was a woman."

Go Henrik.

Right up there with the Obama Trumpage in terms of the necessity and value of such slam downs for the good of society at large.

From the usenet tubes:

Jonathon Toews had 1 goal and minus 3 in last year's SCF- what's his girl name?

Sidney Crosby in 2009 had 1G 3A and minus 3 in finals, pointless in final 3 games- what's his girl name?

Zetterberg and Datsyuk have 5G in 22 combined games in SCF- what are their girl names?

This is why having a deep lineup is so important.
