VCU Beats Florida State: A layup off an inbounds pass with 7.1 seconds left and a blocked shot at the buzzer gave Virginia Commonwealth a 72-71 victory over Florida State Friday night. No. 11 seed VCU, one of four teams in the play-in round's "First Four," are now a win from the Final Four.

Much as I disliked the expanded play-in games format when it was announced, it must be said that this is the type of tournament-enhancing result you would like to see from giving a few more teams an opportunity to compete.

I don't want to see the media make too much of a hot commodity out of coach Shaka Smart in the midst of the excitement. Let him stay at VCU a little while yet. VCU has already done more than its share of losing head coaches to higher profile programs in recent years.

It's tough to be a U.of Virginia fan at the moment, that program languishing in the forgotten zone of the ACC as a coaching sargasso, while VCU, Richmond, and Va. Tech all seem to be clicking along nicely.

Having followed Colonial Athletic Association basketball this year, I'm more than a little surprised at what VCU has been able to accomplish. The big weapon they have is Rodriguez. He can score when he has to, plays great defense, and distributes the ball very well. I've heard it said that a basketball team can win at a high level with a solid point guard and either a dependable shooter or a strong center/power forward. VCU has this, and they have done a great job this year. The one thing I can brag about is my alma mater Northeastern beat them by 11 in Boston this year.

And now they get to run into the buzz-saw that is Kansas. I was impressed with the way VCU manhandled Purdue, so maybe they have some magic left.

And Old Dominion, and George Mason...
