Oakland Raiders Cancel Cable: The Oakland Raiders are declining to extend the contract of head coach Tom Cable, the team announced Tuesday. Cable, who was 17-27 in under three seasons with the team and 8-8 this year, broke an assistant coach's jaw in 2009 and physically abused a former wife and girlfriend, ESPN reported.
Yeah, that is a little suspect. There is an aroma of stupid permeating the copy.

I don't think Cable's history got him fired. Ironically, the team had no problem with that stuff but decided to fire him for the most promising Raiders season in a while.

He got fired because he doesn't get along with Al Davis. That's the only important factor for that particular head coaching position for quite awhile now.

And who does get along with Al Davis?

Rumor has it that Raider assistant Hue Jackson is going to be the next Raider coach.
I liked him in The Prestige but not so much the Wolverine stuff.

I heard a reference to a bonus ($2M is the number I recall) that was to have been paid to Cable had he been under contract to Oakland after a certain date. Sorry I didn't hear the details. It is not atypical that Al Davis is tight enough with a buck that he would throw away a decent coach and in the process sacrifice a team just to save some pennies. How long will the league continue to put up with him?

Had they fired Cable for the abuse and the breaking of his assistant's jaw when it happened, this would have made some sense. Firing him now just makes Al Davis look even more senile. This is the best the Raiders have looked in years.
The question now is: Who is Al Davis going to find that is either desperate or crazy enough to want the job now?
