49ers Fire Coach Mike Singletary: Following the 25-17 loss to the St. Louis Rams that eliminated them from the playoff hunt, the San Francisco 49ers have fallen to 5-10 and fired coach Mike Singletary, the team announced Sunday. "Singletary couldn't win arguably the worst division in the NFL, even when all he needed was season-ending wins against the Rams and Cardinals," laments the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Niners have fired Mike Singletary for going 5-10 with one game left to go.

That almost seems a bit premature.

5-10 might have been good enough to get it done in the NFC West this year.

They are a bad bad team, but is that really Singletary's fault?

Somebody has got to take the blame, and that usually (rightly or not) is the coach.

I think the 49ers underperformed their talent by several wins this year. So yes, it's on the coaches.

That explosion on the sidelines with his QB? Bad coaching. The "I'm not an Xs and Os" guy? It shows. Good riddance Giant Wooden Cross Guy.

Preseason forecasts had them at 9-10 wins this season, so five is falling pretty far short. Plus the inability to stick with a Smith at QB.

Encouragingly, Jed is apparently bringing his Uncle Eddie in to help get the team back to where they used to be, results-wise. I'm sure Jed's mom and dad are not thrilled but for me it's a smart, overdue move.

Good riddance Giant Wooden Cross Guy.

Seconded. If you want to spread your faith, it helps to perform a few miracles.

I knew this guy couldn't coach back when they blew a 14 point lead against Atlanta. They were 0-5 celebrating like they won the superbowl after every first down and it was obvious that he had no discipline and had lost control of the team. He was a great player but a terrible coach.

Singletary is a good guy to have around a football team - just not as a head coach. Pretty certain a team will pick him up as a position coach.

The 49ers have been bad ever since Eddie D was removed, resulting in a whole whack of high draft picks. A pretty good situation for a good coach, I'd think.
