Giants Running Back Throws Helmet into Stands: New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs threw his helmet 10 rows into the stands during the team's 38-14 loss to the Indianapolis Colts last night, which he said was an accident. No one was hurt, but it sparked a dispute when the fan who caught it wouldn't give it back. "Yelling ensued after the throw, first by angry and frightened Colts fans toward Jacobs, then by Jacobs toward them and finally from Tom Coughlin directed toward his running back," Yahoo's Shutdown Corner reports. "The Giants coach loudly chastised his player on the sideline and didn't put him back in the game following the incident."

LOVE that accident excuse! It must be annoying to players when they're standing there with their helmet and it "accidentally" flies way up into the stands. Guess Jacobs doesn't like sitting behind Bradshaw on the depth chart, and the way the entire Giants offense looked last night, can't say as I blame him. The helmet in the stands should help the situation though.

Honestly, though, what a horrible performance by the Giants. I can't even comprehend any other ways in which they could have been out-performed.

He wants out of New york and can throw a helmet ten rows deep.

He could go to the Cards and play Quarterback.

Day after Christmas, the Giants will be in Green Bay. If Jacobs is still on the team and does a Lambeau Leap after scoring, the fans just might keep him up in the stands for good, helmet and all.

There ought to be a grand survey across a range of sports determining which items are keepers when they go into the crowd. (Am I right in thinking that an NFL game ball that either misses the netting or gets flung into the stands generally doesn't make its way back down?)

My take is that if you hoy your helmet into the home crowd at an away game, accident or no, you've waved goodbye to it; if you're at home, you can perhaps rely upon the goodwill of fans, but you still have no right to it back.

I think they usually try to retrieve footballs that leave the field in the course of play. Of course, that doesn't mean they come back.

I agree with you, though, as far as I'm concerned any piece of equipment that finds it's way into the stands is fair game for whoever catches it, and they have no obligation to give it back. (Although I understand why baseball bat shards are confiscated for safety reasons.)

I felt bad when that asshole security guard yanked the helmet from the guy. Just let him keep it, Jacobs is the idiot who ruined my fantasy team this week anyways.
