Revis and Jets Agree on New Contract: The Jets announced early Monday that they have agreed to terms with the All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, who missed all of training camp because he was unhappy with his contract.

The Jets had been preparing to head into the first week of the season without Revis, whom Coach Rex Ryan has often described as the best defensive player in the N.F.L.

Not only that, but the Jets promised Revis last year that they would take care of him. He was only the seventh highest paid DB on his own team.

Jets ownership should have taken care of him much earlier and saved us all the drama, but they were too busy preening for Hard Knocks.

Considering that Revis outperformed his current contract, is widely considered to be the best defensive back in the league and as cjets pointed out, the Jets told him that they would re-do his contract last year, it's about time.

If the Jets have any plans to be taken serious and to make a run at a Super Bowl, they had to get this done.

and a precedent is set

Sean Gilbert was his agrent and sat out a season himself 10 years ago. There is your precedent.

I don't know why American professional sports even bother with contracts. They mean nothing to both owners and players and add to both sides sense of entitlement.

Contracts mean a lot in sports where they are guaranteed. The NFL is an exception.

And because unlike real life, a professional player can pull off the holdout and still keep their job plus get paid more (usually). Just looks at first-round draft picks.

THIS.

I'm surprised that people dismiss Revis' plan, while forgetting about players (like Matt Leinart) who sign long-term contracts and then get cut and don't get paid for the last years of their deal.

Holding out is the ONLY plan that a player can have for getting as much money as (they feel) they deserve.

If owners honoured the full term of the contract, then players would be forced to honour it as well.
