Agent: Why Does Favre Have to Be Such a Drama Queen?: "Brett talked to goddamned Ed Werder at ESPN, says he needs ankle surgery. Now why did he do that? I've got Childress calling. I've got reporters calling all damn morning. Goddammit, why does he have to be such a goddamned drama queen? Play, don't play, goddamn, people are getting sick of it. I'm getting sick of it! Why does he have to talk to these people?" -- Brett Favre's agent Bus Cook

I just assume that it's this year's pretext for skipping camp. Once training camp's done, he'll be fine and ready to play.

The past five years, I'd have completely agreed with this sentiment. This year, not so much, and not just because I'm a Vikings fan. Favre didn't retire at the end of the season like he did the previous two years; he hasn't held any press conferences to announce his bogus "decisions", and he's generally tried to stay out of the spotlight. The media just seems to want to make it a story again, when everybody pretty much knew exactly what would happen the minute the Vikings lost. Favre would find some reason to skip training camp, but be there for the last preseason game.

Childress is doing a good job of playing along with the "Will he or won't he?" game because he has to make it look like he's not just letting Favre off the hook for training camp, but let's face it: Favre's playing this season (barring another injury), and everyone knows it.

He's aiming for the Saints obviously no matter what he says!!

I wish a scenario could exist where NOBODY involved with the NFL, the Vikings, or the media would speak to Brett Favre throughout the entire offseason. Go about their business like they could care less whether he comes back or not. Favre would probably cry. He needs to know someone is going to kiss his ass regarding football, and without that ass-kissing, he wouldn't be able to exist. This whole act of his has been so reinforced over the years it's pathetic.

And yet again this year, sports news sources are eating right out of his hand. They sit and point out the absurdity of all of his hemming and hawing and "aw shucks, I don't know" bullshit while giving him a round-the-clock media outlet to tool around with at his leisure. I really love the way he plays the game of football, the rest of it needs to go away. Good god, man, give Lebron a chance to get a little attention.

I haven't heard anything from Favre at all this off season. I agree with TQ, if anyone is to blame it's the media for trying to make a story out of a non-story.

Really? I would think if it was the media's fault, Favre's agent wouldn't go all "goddammit, goddammit". It's fucking priceless that his own agent snapped. Love it.

Also, I have absolutely nothing against Favre other than he may be the most overrated QB of all-time. (Which would be a lot easier a case to make if he didn't play last year.)

If you haven't heard anything, it isn't because he hasn't been talking. If anyone wanted to know that he hasn't set a deadline for his return, that he will let the Vikings know by July 30, that he needs ankle surgery, that he has gained weight since January, he isn't concerned about long-term injury, that he just isn't sure about playing next season, that he does want to play this year, that he would like another chance to beat the Saints, and, oh, he is a grandpa. And, really, I could go on. Favre's agent is exactly right.

I think whether or not he plays is a story of some interest to many. It's the damn build up that's infuriating. If he would just start putting some thought into the matter shortly after the season ends and make and announce a decision in a timely manner, not waiting until the middle or end of camp, then we could all avoid the 20 hour a day August Farve-a-thon.

honestly, I can't figure out why Favre bothers so many of you the way he does. I'm a Viking's fan, it ought to drive me nuts, but I've accepted it. I'm good with him skipping most of training camp, and it appears most of his coaches/teammates are as well.

Seriously, it seems as though some are just waiting for him, or in this case his agent, to say anything so they can complain about it.

There are plenty of drama queens/whores in sports, ignore them. Really not that hard to do, this article is in the August Men's Journal, not exactly on the front page of the sports section or on ESPN.

Not that easy to do if you enjoy sports on many levels. The idea he can, or thinks he can, ignore his team and their needs during each and every off-season, through training camp, sends a terrible message to athletes in the NFL, as well as other athletes of all ages. And it's not like he's a Super Bowl mainstay either. He's come up short each and every season since early in his career, and some of the losses in playoff games have been due to horrible performances by him. The fact he leaves his teams hanging from his final game of each year through the next season's opener shows he's selfish and only out for himself. Dviking has fallen under the same spell Favre has cast over other teams he has played for. Fans think they can't do any better, so if he chooses to "grace" them with his presence they should be thankful. Bullshit. Don't bash any other contract holdout or attitude problem in the game without throwing Favre in the mix. He puts up some good stats, but his open-assed play will continue to mean his teams come up short, because come playoff time, a good defense will make him look stupid. Each and every season I gain more and more respect for Peyton Manning, a guy who is actually a good teammate, works hard, works hard during every off-season, and carries that same attitude throughout the entire year.

The idea we are so quick to bash and criticize other athletes who don't want to show up to camp when under contract and play games with their employers and team members, yet continue to give Favre a pass, says something about us, and I'm not sure what it is.

It's not Favre that bothers me, it's the incessant coverage of what is essentially an unimportant story, except to Vikings fans. The same holds true for most coverage of LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Sidney Crosby, and many others. If these people do something significant in the arena, I want to hear about it. When these people are featured just because some TV network or print magazine thinks I should care, they should realize I really don't care. I am now at the point where I deliberately will not watch ESPN News, ESPN Sports Center, COMCAST Sports, Fox Sports, or any of their ilk. Nor will I do more than scan through the print editions of Sports Illiterate Illustrated or ESPN's rag. I love sports, but I dislike the deification of certain sports personalities. It's nothing personal, Bret, LeBron, Kobe, or Sidney. I'm just sick and tired of hearing about you.

One of the benefits of being as old as I am is the number of medical appointments I have. I don't need to subscribe to SI, as I am never more than 2 or 3 weeks behind when I sit in the waiting rooms.

Well, yea, but he has gotten two different teams to the NFC Championship in two of the last three years. So, short, but far better than most QB's.

To be clear, i've fallen under no such spell, I have clearly stated in other posts that Favre is a short term fix for the Vikings at best, but yes, he is clearly better than T-Jack. My hope for Favre has been that he could do something with the team now, while they search for, or develop, a replacement. The supporting cast is in place, I'd hate to lose a couple more years working through T-Jacks shortcomings.

I'm fine with people thinking that even a Hall of Fame QB doesn't deserve a pass on any of the pre-season workouts, I disagree with them, but I'm cool with you having that opinion. My point was, why get so upset every time somebody (in this case not even Brett) says something about him. It's like you're feeding the very media frenzy that you hate. I'm a Vikings fan, and I just totally ignore any Brett talk, so it never gets my blood pressure up.
