I sat up until 3 in the morning listening to coverage of the US Open on the radio and cheering on my countryman to his win. It sounded like an exciting final day. McDowell is only the second Northern Irishman to win a major, our other triumph coming from Fred Daly who won the Open in 1947.

How different will this look when November rolls around?

CFL pre-season (yes, a two-game pre-season) wrapped yesterday. The lopsided Calgary win over Saskatchewan yesterday is the only deviation from the way I foresee things playing out this year.

That a Malian ref officiating the Chile-Switzerland match?

Valdivia from Chile just got yellow-carded for diving in the box. That is outstanding work from that referee, as the replay absolutely confirmed that call.

Tim Howard is inspired by how angry American fans have gotten over the phantom call that denied the team a 3-2 lead against Slovenia.

North Korea's 7-0 loss to Portugal was broadcast live at home via state-run TV.

I wonder how the regime explained the crushing outcome to the North Korean population.

The easy gambit: a Malian referee overseeing the match from the sidelines and operating on instructions from Kim Jong Il, all seven goals disallowed due to unseen outrageous fouls by the one-time colonial imperialist adventurers, the true people's result a 0-0 draw.

Message to the Portuguese merchant marine: best not to send any vessels north of Inchon at the moment.

What a goal by Villa!

What a dive by Villa!

JJ, glad you could at least hear McDowell's victory, even at 0300 on a Monday. I was flipping back and forth between the Red Sox vs Dodgers and the Open, but I stayed with the golf when it came to the 18th. The scene when McDowell clinched it was wonderful and emotional. To have your Dad there when you win - on Fathers' Day to boot - came close to bringing a tear or 2 to my eyes.

Anyone know the story of this horrifying gymnastics photo?

That's incredible, grum. I love that story.

grum, you have no idea how many "geeky" folk I've got who will love that blog ... myself included.

The late Manute Bol (may have) originated the phrase "My bad!"

I read this on kottke. I remember that phrase being everywhere, and using it, at around that same time (1988). I can't almost swear we were using it a little earlier (1986/87). Even if I'm wrong about that it was definitely already everywhere at the exact time they're saying Bol coined the phrase.

In other words, maybe he made it popular on a larger scale, but no, I don't see anyway they're correct.

Manute Bol did not coin "my bad"

Now I'm confident we were using it mid 80s. I wonder if the origin of most english phrases are that badly researched.
