Stanley Cup Finals Pickem 2010: Will we ever again see an all-Original 6 Finals? Will a 7-seed beat a 2-seed? Will garfield get his picks in before the Conn Smythe winner is named? Check inside to see, and make your own picks as well...
Chicago in 6
That Dustin Buffalo guy will win the Conn Smythe.
Thanks a ton for running this game, MS. Good job.

I'm going out on a limb and picking Philly in 6, and Mike Richards as the Conn Smythe winner. The Flyers have the distinction of knocking off the team that knocked off both the President's Trophy winner and the defending Cup winner, and Chicago has Marian Hossa. I'd love nothing more than to see him go 0-3 in consecutive Finals...

Philly in 7, if you please.
Mr Pronger from the Flyers, thanks.

Hawks in 5, and I'll take Mr. Toews.

Hawks in 6...also Toews.

Hawks in 4.
Toews.
(But the Hossa thing certainly gives one pause. And if my track record is any indication this year - congratulations Flyers!)

Well, there's something really frightening for me about the 'hawks playing in these Finals: since I flipped my pick in the Vancouver series, they've been burning me. Thank goodness I have Toews in my office pool! Along with a whole fleet of Flyers (and the Philly goalies), of course (yes, I am pretty much guaranteed the win in that pool).
Months ago I picked the Flyers as my "dark horse". Now that Carter is back on the ice, they're offensive power is right back where it needs to be. I think this is gonna be an "oh my" series though ... gotta think it will take 7 ... but for my "official" picks (on time this round):
Philadelphia Flyers in 5 games. I'm not sure they would give the Smythe to Toews if the 'hawks lose (Giguere is the last to win w/o the Cup, no?) ... ah, heck ... the kid has been amazing. Toews for the Smythe win or lose the Cup.
posted by Spitztengle at 12:19 AM on May 25, 2010
No skater has ever won the Conn Smythe without the Cup, but there is a first time for everything...
apoch, Halak's chances are greatly diminished since he's no longer playing, but if you wanna take the long-shot...
posted by MeatSaber at 12:42 AM on May 25, 2010
Philadelphia in 6 I don't see anyone other than Gagne getting the Smythe if the Flyers win it all.
begrudgingly submitted by a Devils fan

Seeing as my goose egg in round 3 has allowed Weedy to pull in to a tie with me for the coveted 23rd place position. I am going to even the playing field and take the opposite of what he took. Now everyone has an equal chance right? Oh wait, can anything cancel out the Hossa effect?
Flyers in 6 with former Springfield Falcon and Paul McCartney look alike Daniel Briere taking home the Conn Smyth

Hawks in 5. They are far more skilled then the Flyers and have the size to play physical with them.

Flyers in 6. Giroux. dude is a gamer.

Chicago in 4. Toews.

@Mr. Frisby:
I like the way you think! People laugh at me when I pick Gagne first in hockey pools ... but perhaps I will have the last laugh on them.
posted by Spitztengle at 11:26 AM on May 25, 2010
I guess, for the record, I should state that my Toews pick is more of a bet hedge than an actual prediction that a non-Cup-winner will be handed the Smythe. Those exciting little bastards in Chicago could take this one in 5 too. I'll stick with my Flyer pick ... but keep Toews as MVP "just in case".
but I reserve the right to see what NoMich picks ;)

Flyers in 7 Leighton

Chicago in 5. I want to choose Toews as my pick, but everyone is doing that so I'm going to go with Dustin Byfulgien ... uh Buflygien ... um Byfunglien ... Byfuglien!
As a Leaf fan, it kills me to watch ANOTHER Original 6 franchise break a longer Cup-failure streak than Toronto's current run, but those kids look too damn good.
BTW, if someone told you at the start of the season that the opposing goalies in the Stanley Cup final would be Niemi and Leighton...

He's already picked.

While my results in the conference semis and finals were somewhat less than spectacular (I didn't get even one team correct, but lucked into the correct number of games in at least one series), I will persevere. Chicago finally breaks the curse and wins the Stanley Cup in a 6-game series. Of course, the Curse of the Muldoon is fiction, as admitted by the original writer, Jim Coleman, as my prediction might well be.

@Spitz, every year that I had Gagne in a fantasy league he's killed me by spending too much time on the IR, but the Flyers would have never pulled that miracle comeback against Boston without him. I'm sure by the time it comes to vote on the CS that the people who do will have forgotten that, but I'm still picking him anyways.

Having scored 0 points now in the previous two rounds, I am reaching out to my good friend Thomas Jefferson care of his nickel. Through the power of coin flips, I pick
Flyers (tails)
in an odd-number of games (tails)
make that in 7 games (tails again! something wrong with this nickel?)

Don't sell yourself short, kokaku...you got 1 point in round 2... =D
I need Conn Smythe picks for kokaku, Debo270, and Howard_T as quick as you please, please...

Hawks in 5.
Toews.

Yes Meat - I forgot the one point for number of games (which I had originally thought was only awarded if you picked the team correctly). And I got off to such a good start :)
As for Conn Smythe... Gagne
posted by kokaku at 11:59 PM on May 26, 2010
I'll go along with the conventional wisdom and pick Toews for the Conn Smythe. Since it covers the entire playoffs, and not just the finals, Gagne is a strong possibility, as would be Rask had the Bruins gotten this far.

In the 15+ years Bettman has been commish, can you cite any instance where he made the right call when an opportunity presented itself?

Toews: 0 G, 0 A, -3
and the only goalie who gave up less than five goals was Brian Boucher. hmm.

Having family visiting from America and dragging me on a road trip to France (yeah, it sounds better than it is) had me miss my finals picks. Oh well. I feel confident with my winner, sure that my games won't hit and probable about my Conn Smythe winner, which leads me to believe I won't leap into first, but it was fun to play when I was able to get picks in on time.
Next time, no family staying for 16 days in our 1 bedroom apartment.

Results for the first three rounds will be up later, but you can still get your picks submitted. For the Finals, you'll get 2 points for the winner, 1 point for number of games, and a bonus 3 points for picking the correct Conn Smythe winner. So let's see them picks...
