Big hockey game today: USA v Canada. Ryan Miller needs to be just a hair better than Jonas Hiller was the other day. Which means, he needs to stand on a freakin' head all night long.

The game is listed to start at 4:40 today. Is that local Vancouver time or Eastern time? I'm assuming it's Pacific time, but I just want to make sure.

Oh, and Finland v Sweden afterwards. Excellent night for hockey.

Kind of a strange line in the baseball notes today (not sure if the source is the Globe or the AP):

"The Chicago Cubs beat Ryan Theriot in salary arbitration, and the shortstop will be paid $2.6 million this season instead of his request for a raise from $500,000 to $3.4 million."

Where do I sign up for a beating?

No worries, I actually found a number of craigslist ads that seem to fit the bill.

Something that's bugging me: I watched some of ABC's Rugby Sevens broadcast yesterday and they showed a segment about rugby at the Olympics. Hasn't happened since 1924. First they showed a photo of the grounds, then they showed what purported to be footage of the Games, all sepia-toned and crackly. Except there was a sign reading "Fly Emirates" smack dab in the middle of the screen. Which was odd, given:

1. commercial flights weren't all that common seven years after Kitty Hawk
2. Emirates Air is only about 20 years old.
3. Would they really have kept the same slogan all that time?

Mrs. yerfatma thinks I should shut the hell up about it, but that's a damned strange thing for a company that also has a news division to be doing.

posted by yerfatma at 11:21 AM on February 21, 2010

My guess is that back in those days Emirates was an opium manufacturer and that was their slogan to get you to get high on their brand of drugs.

Also, the Kitty Hawk flight by the Wright brothers was in 1903.

Thanks for the clarification, Tommy.

No worries, though it's my understanding that NBC is going to show figure skating on the main network, and bump the Canada vs. U.S.A. game to MSNBC. Up here in the Great White North, I suspect we'll get the game on CTV.

Is there any way to watch any of the 'lympics on the net, if one is not a cable subscriber? I don't care if it's three days late, I just want to see some of it.

Tragedy struck for Canada's Joannie Rochette today, set to compete in the women's individual figure skating competition on Tuesday, when she lost her mother to a sudden heart attack this morning shortly after her mother's arrival in Vancouver. At this point it seems Rochette still plans to compete.

l_b_b, go to ctvolympics.ca . The Canadian Olympic Network Consortium ( 11 channels!! ) is offering live (seems to be about 5 seconds behind t.v.) webcasts of the Games.

Right now, you have your choice of Men's Curling, Olympic News, Long Track Speed Skating, and your choice of French or English broadcasts.

The American women were destroyed in curling today by the Canadians.

Another curling opponent (maybe it was France?) said they loved competing against Canada because they learned something valuable every time they got stomped.

My hat's off to 'em for that.

I haven't gotten to see any of the Olympic curling, but...somehow, the curling bug has just now bitten me on the backside.

With this sport, you either roll your eyes and dismiss it, or sense the essence of it and grip your chair.

I went back and watched clips of past Canadian championships, and I will admit to having gripped the chair.

The speed of the whole thing (or absence of it) is so compelling. And I had no idea it was a rather boisterous sport.

In the end, it's one of those sports where there may not end up being a significant gender differential. I saw no reason why a good women's team couldn't give a good men's team a run for their money.

NBC, you're really blowing it. While I think it's wonderful that you choose to broadcast curling ad nauseum on the flagship network, or on CNBC in glorious HD, the fact that the US-Canada men's hockey game is on MSNBC (no HD availability) is a complete disgrace. Watching each and every of 50 qualifying runs for the skiercross in HD was just super, so I'm not poo-pooing the decision to allocate your resources that way. It's just that this is kind of a big game. If Norway/Switzerland warrants the HD treatment, I think Canada/USA does.

Or maybe I (also) just don't know anything about putting on a profitable Olympic broadcast.

Absolutely ridiculous to have that game on MSNBC. I realize they cannot show as many commercials, but give me a break -- what a wasted opportunity (perhaps more so for the game of hockey, which could use the exposure).

Speaking of baseball, I've had my dashboard countdown timer set to the first official Jays spring training workout since the day after the World Series ended. It's now down to 10 hours 22 minutes, and I'm giddy. I barely even noticed the hockey game tonight. (Except for watching the whole thing, but still.)

I read the description and watched the videos, but I still don't get it. It appears to be a mass of people milling around and a ball that occasionally pops out with people chasing it. The description was somewhat amusing, though. Do you have anything more on this?

Actually, all of the games after the first day (referred to henceforth as "curb-stomping day") have been VERY entertaining. I can understand why the NHL isn't too happy to stop their season and allow the players to play: when they come back to finish the NHL season, all the games look very dull in comparison.

Birds are notorious for leaving surprises on shoulders, so no parrots for me. This particular cat seems to think she owns my shoulder during the day and my pillow at night. What's worse is that my wife has trained our other 2 to sleep under the covers with us. The king-size bed can get mighty crowded.
