There have been recent reports that a development group is seeking to bring an NFL franchise to L.A.

The Jags and Bills are the top two teams that the group is targeting. Bills owner Ralph Wilson has already said that his team isn't going anywhere. (Well, maybe to Banff, but not Southern California). That leaves the Jags.

If the Jags move to LA, would they change their name to the Cougars in the hope that locals like Demi Moore and Teri Hatcher would suit up for the cheer squad? Think of how many skateboarders and landscapers would attend the games.

In a related story, Jack del Rio is evidently on the short list to replace Pete Carroll at USC. Geez, would the Jags let him go to his alma mater just like that?

Interesting to think that Jack and the Jags could both end up in LA, but for different reasons.

The Jags mascot is already looking at a script for the sequel to the current Clooney hit "Up In The Air".

Jack of the River was on the bubble already in Jacksonville and barely survived to coach another year. I think the Jaguars would let him go to USC with few qualms. I think a better question is this: Why would USC want him?

I would love the LA Cougers and hope their mascot is a picture of an actual 45 year old supermodel with three pounds of collagen in her lips and unnecessary botox.

I agree with rcade (who obviously is in a far better position to have his finger on the local pulse) re the Jags letting del Rio go. I believe he is meant to meet with Weaver this week, and the main thing that might hold Weaver back from firing him after the 1-5 finish to the season is likely the payout for the last 3 years of his current deal, which becomes a moot point (or at least severely lessens the adverse financial impact) if del Rio takes another job.

I disagree with the assertion that USC would not want him, though. Experience has shown that success in coaching college does not translate into success in coaching in the NFL and lack of NFL success does not necessarily portend lack of college success (see Saban, Nick, Carroll, Pete, and Spurrier, Steve, among others). Then again, there are those who suck at both (see Groh, Al). So I would imagine USC may be favorably inclined to at least kick the tires with del Rio -- his professional record does not suck that bad (putting aside the struggles to the finish line and late-season collapses, he's 57-55 overall), he is an alum, and he can always use the "I know what it takes to get players drafted and to be successful in the NFL" line on the recruiting trail.

Please add Lou Holtz, who didn't last a year with the Jets, despite writing a college type fight song for the team and making them sing it every week.

Recapping an incredibly odd weekend in the NHL: A full moon isn't due in these parts for another few days, but you'd never know it if you were watching the NHL over the weekend. From 10-minute power plays to power outages, we saw some of the strangest hockey incidents in recent memory in the past 48 hours or so.

The 10-minute power play is my favourite moment of that weekend. It's like one of those "getting the 4th-out" occurrences in baseball.

Apparently Michael Redd's knee ligaments are about as strong as old rubberbands. He tore two and is out for the season... again.
