New Jersey Nets Open Season with 18 Straight Losses: The New Jersey Nets have set a new NBA record for losses to start the season. By going 0-and-18 to start 2009 with last night's 117-101 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, the Nets have passed the 1988-89 Miami Heat and the 1998-99 Los Angeles Clippers to claim the worst start of all time. "If you're trying to get a great draft pick, they're doing it the right way," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said.

I feel kind of bad for them. As dfleming notes, they've got some really nice young players, and I'll always have some love for Devin. But the Mavs ripping off FGs at a better than 80% rate in the first half last night was pretty sweet, even if it was vs The Nyets.

Harris is probably the only player on the roster who could crack most starting lineups around the league. Next year's draft class will be one of the weakest in years. Better get active in the free agent market quick !
If only they still had another declining veteran to trade to Dallas for an up and coming star ..

Fan-wise I think there also stuck in neutral due to the overhanging move to Brooklyn, delayed by anti-development lawsuits and such. Pity, for a team that went to the Finals not so long ago.

Their start is nothing compared to the Sonics this year.

...isn't that a little difficult considering the Sonics aren't even the Sonics anymore?

And so you understand my pain.

And so you understand my pain.
Very much so, unfortunately.

You know what would make this a lot more enjoyable for me ?
If Vince Carter was still a Net.

That was sweet of Mark Cuban to put the Nets season into perspective and help them see the bright side of all those losses.

The team doesn't lack talent; Lopez, Douglas-Roberts and Harris are all players with bright, long NBA futures ahead of them. That said, there is almost zero star power and none of the young players have shown an ability to grab the team and put them on their back. In short, they're a star away from being a competitive team and perhaps that star is the #1 overall pick next year (or one of the stud free-agents.)
