The seemingly never-ending season moves into another phase.

Posting from the New England region:

What the Pats did to their opponents in 2007 was shock-and-awe-inspiring, but it was also clinical, ruthless, and joyless. It was not heart-warming and fulfilling to behold.

By comparison, what the Saints are doing to their opponents this year is just plain fun to watch. Even if fans have to suffer through watching Shockey enjoying himself.

The icing on the entertainment cake: who better to coach a team named the Saints than a guy who is the spitting image of the Saturday Night Live Church Lady?

Weird pre-emptive demand in the New York Daily News from columnist Jesse Spector: "... let's get this out of the way now, so it's not a reactionary thing if the Yankees lose their sixth and seventh consecutive games with the American League pennant within their grasp: So this is not to say that the Yankees will lose this ALCS, but if they do, Joe Girardi should be fired."

So this is to say that whether or not the Yankees lose, let's get this out of the way now -- terrific sentence structure, Spector!

United's Nemanja Vidic was sent off for the third successive time against Liverpool today as the Reds ended their first four loss run in 22 years with a 2-0 win over ManU. Once again Sir Alex was very unhappy with the referee's decisions; is there a manager who picks up more fines for such comments?

The Myths (and Truths) of the Wildcat Offense

From the NHL come 2 items of interest. First in his weekly Boston Globe "Hockey Notes" column, Kevin Paul DuPont tells us who the man behind the mask really was.

On a more somber note, Bill Chadwick, the first US born referee and for 14 years a fixture in the New York Rangers' broadcast booth has passed away at 94. This is the USA Today obituary. Chadwick told the story of a fan in Boston who yelled out, "Hey Chadwick, you're so good we named a town after you." When Chadwick asked where Chadwick, Mass, was, the fan replied, "It's not Chadwick, it's Marblehead."

Ahhhh, that was a satisfying win. Had to mute the TV announcers who spent 3+ hours stroking Favre's .... ego.

How do you know it's a Sunday? Jake Delhomme is throwing interceptions.

Tony Romo had a terrific day against the Atlanta Falcons, throwing for 311 yards and three TDs and amassing a 150 QB rating. It wasn't on TV here, unfortunately.

How 'bout them Aints? I guess you can never count them out of any game.

Lock and Trifecta hits, 7-3-1 against the spread and 9-2 straight up.

Hell, we might even be back to positive money.
