The Hoser's NFL Picks 2009, Week Three: NFL picks that are using a looped tape of Joe Theismann's injury as an appetite suppressant.
Anyone else starting to think perhaps the oldest Manning brother isn't the best?
Cooper was pretty good, but he was diagnosed with spinal stenosis , a narrowing of the spinal canal, forcing him to end his football career after high school .
His little brothers have done okay though.
Just teasing you, Hoser. I look forward to reading your indepth analysis every week.

It deeply pains me to say it, but I don't think the Patriots are gonna be the lock any week this season. Sigh.
(and yeah about Eli...he's turned into quite the quarterback)

Man, you really need to cut it out with the "racist" thing. Not only is it getting old and boring, it is getting pretty stupid. I think by now we all know your views on the Redskins. Drop it already! BTW: I am not a Redskins fan, just had enough of the racist crap.
posted by bknutti at 09:49 PM on September 24, 2009
The fact that you're complaining about me using the word "racist" instead of the team's name?
That's exactly why I won't stop doing it.

When you spell "center" as "centre", you're not a newly minted Canadian anymore. You're official, you're in, you belong. You are now fully North American.
The only people who spell it as "centre" here in the US are wannabe developers trying to add some international cachet to the name of their condominium complex.
When they get tired of "Centre", they switch to "Pointe".
"Flamingo Pointe: If you lived here, you'd be home now..."
Seeing the Chargers-Dolphins game listing, I can't help but let my mind wander back to the 1982 playoffs. What a game. Along with Earl Morrall's brilliant season in relief of Griese, perhaps Shula's finest moment. Even in defeat.

Please don't bring that game up again. It only serves to remind me that I need to drive by Uwe Von Schamann's house and shoot out his porch light.

Jets are down two cornerbacks and Sanchez is probable from tendinitis in a knee. Change the line on the game?

You're right, tommytrump, I did join that day. But I have been reading his NFL picks for a couple of years. I've always found them interesting and entertaining, except for the constant shots at the Redskins. I decided to join that day so I could post about the racist bullshit. After 2 years it is getting "old and boring", don't you think? Is every team that carries a mascot that honors Native Americans racist? PLEASE! Not hardly. And Hoser...if the reason you won't stop doing it is because people like me complain, its really time to leave Jr High and join us in the adult world!

BK, if you really beileve that using the term "Redskins" is honouring Native Americans, I'd direct you to this discussion held just a week ago on SportsFilter.
You have a right to your opinion. But the picks are my forum to voice mine, and through the repetition of the use of "Racists," it's always been my hope maybe just one person would look more deeply into this issue and think, "Wow, that is really horrible. Perhaps I should reconsider my stance."
Maybe it's you, BK, or maybe it's already happened with someone else.
I've received plenty of hate mail and grief about it over the years, and it hasn't changed my mind one bit.
You won't, either.

Hoser, you are not going to change my mind either. I find your constant use of the word "racist" is actually demeaning to actual racism. But I guess in this wonderful "PC" world that is what we have come too. When liberals and fascist run the country, they do their best to scare people into not saying certain words or thinking certain thoughts. I am not, however, one of the sheep who is scared. When Washington named their team I guarantee it was meant to honor the Indians, not be racist. Same with the Braves, the Seminoles, the Warriors and other like named teams. Indians struck fear in the hearts of their opponents, thus the use of their name and images as sports mascots. Who is going to be scared of the "Fighting Preppers?"
I don't dislike you. I do, in fact, find your picks and commentary to be quite entertaining. It's just after seeing this over and over again, I felt the need to express my opinion.
Truce? Agree to disagree?

bk, your ignorance of history is showing (and alarming).
The franchise originated in Boston (1932), and was at first called the Boston Braves.
After one year, while still in Boston, they changed the nickname to Redskins [I wish I knew how to draw that line through words, I'd have made it Redskins (crossed out) Racists] .
Due to poor crowds, the franchise was moved to Washington in 1937 .
Note: Perfect opportunity to rename the franchise, to something without racist connotations.
There doesn't seem to be a history of equality in the organization at all.
There was no clamour to name the team Redskins to honour the native people of North America.
In fact, the Washington football team was the last professional football team to integrate their roster, and did so only under pressure from the federal government.
That's some proud history there.
Agree or disagree ?

BK, I had a long answer and it disappeared on me, so here's the shorter version just using your quotes:
I find your constant use of the word "racist" is actually demeaning to actual racism.
If you don't believe this is actual racism, you don't know or understand what racism is.
I am not, however, one of the sheep who is scared.
We're not talking about your feelings. We're talking about you being a racist.
When Washington named their team I guarantee it was meant to honor the Indians, not be racist.
Huh. You guarantee it. Were you there? Do you have a cite for me?
No, you don't.
So let's take the more likely explanation -- a bunch of old white guys decided "Indians" was scary, but "Redskins" brought up the scalping, bloodthirsty denotation they were looking for. Nevermind that even if that image were true, it would have been done trying to force a bunch of thieving, hypocritical squatters off their land. I'm guessing they didn't take a poll of Native Americans to see how they felt about it.
And then you can ignore all of that because even if they had, it doesn't matter because it's offensive now. If you took the time to read what I had pointed out earlierr, you'd know that.
Let's look at it another way. Let's say someone called my mother a whore. Knowing what that word means, I'd be offended. But would I have to call my mother to run it by her to see if she was offended, or could I just reasonably assume she'd be offended? Would you need to call your mother?
Okay, now apply that here. The term "Redskin" is offensive -- if you won't take the time to learn why, you'll have to take our word for it. Do you need to talk to Native Americans to make sure of it, or can you just, on your own, say, "Man, I should not be using that word."
Step up and do the right thing, man.
Truce? Agree to disagree?
You don't make a truce with someone you think is doing something morally wrong. You make your point to them and you hope for the best.
