US vs Mexico: Any other SpoFites heading out to Columbus for the match?

Not really a huge soccer fan, but these US v. Mexico games are fun to watch. I wish I could afford to go see one of them live.

I had a chance to buy tickets before they went on sale to the general public, through the league my daughters' are in. It was around 3 degrees in southern Ohio at the time, I passed. Now it's in the balmy 50's and tickets aren't cheap. I'll watch it on the tube and hope the winds aren't so bad that the result is a scoreless draw. Enjoy the match, goddam. I hope we can continue the 2-0 bit that seems to happen when we play in Columbus! Pictures please!

Oh, and hit Schmidt's if you can.

Only way I can afford this is by driving out there and back the same day. But this match only comes around once every four years so I figured it's worth the sleep deprivation. Thanks tselson. I'll be behind the goal (on the stage) with Sam's Army. Our group from NJ/NY has the first 4 rows so we won't be under the roof. But I should have plenty of pictures.

If we were staying longer we could hit Schmidt's, but my friend has to be back at work by 8am on Thursday.

Ugh, you and your friends willingness to make that road trip make me feel shameful. I'm less than two hours away and am going to watch it in my living room. It just didn't sound like a good idea at the time... when it's totally freezin' outside you just can't imagine that it's ever going to warm up enough to go sit outside for a couple hours. My bad.

Have a safe trip and good luck to your friend:)

Here's a video of the final minutes. I'll have more up later with pics.

tselson, if weather was a concern for you, you were better off not going. We were soaked before we even got into the stadium. And the wind got pretty nasty at times. On the way out I almost got hit by a runaway pretzel cart.

I'm absolutely beat today, but the drive was so worth it. BTW, did anyone see the video of Frankie Hejduk getting slapped by a Mexico coach?

Your video is outstanding, goddam. Thanks!

That's quite a scene in Columbus, Goddam. Thanks for posting that.

What were the flipped birds in response to? ESPN showed the crowd right after the final whistle, and an American fan there was prominently flying the bird too.

The guy in the video was flipping off the ref. The fan flipping the bird on ESPN could have directed towards a number of people. The ref, the Mexican team, Mexico fans. It's a pretty heated rivalry. I saw one US fan get knocked the fuck out after the game outside the stadium. I think he was egging on the Mexican fan, but that's no excuse to punch on the guy. Luckily there was a cop nearby who managed to nab the puncher.

For a proper tunnel fracas, you need to add pizza.

I just assumed it was a polite way of reminding the Mexican fans of the score at the time.

Thanks for the video, goddam. That's great, looks like fun.

Nice timing on the zoom in! The crowd appeared to be into it the whole game and rooting for the home team, as well. My memory sucks but I believe in southern California and maybe even D.C. the crowd wasn't always so behind the home team. (maybe those were friendlies?) Glad you avoided the pretzel cart, the Mexican assistant coach and free swinging Mexican fans. The wind and rain were unavoidable, I guess. It seemed like the weather didn't affect the play too much or the good time in the stands either!

Or Soup.
