Fightin’ Phils are World Series champions: After 28 years, and two days of waiting for the rain to stop so that Game 5 of the World Series could resume, the wait is over.

The Phillies are the champions.

I didn't think the ending would feel as exciting, given the abbreviated event tonight. So much for that idea. A quarter-century of waiting for another championship is over in Philly.

I am happy that Brad Lidge's postseason experience will not be defined by Albert Pujols hitting a ball to Upper Volta off of him.

I'm happy for the best team in MLB. Selig tried to give Cinderella the steal sign but it didn't work.

I'm glad the phillies won, not only because I detest the Rays, but because I thought the rain delay gave the Rays an advantage they didn't deserve.

I'm happy for Jamie Moyer, but not Bret Meyer.

Ironically, the rain delay got this pathetically rated series more attention than anything else, and the talking heads on ESPN actually seemed to enjoy it.

The footballification of baseball continues. In 10 years the World Series will consist of 1 game of 3 innings with a sudden death contest of home run derby in case of a tie played at a neutral location with a 5 hour pregame and an umpiring crew of robots. /grumpy traditionalist

As a Chicagoan and Cubs fan, I am happy to see the Phillies win. All of my relatives live in Allentown and when I visited them as a kid, we would go to the old Connie Mack Stadium (that's dating me), so I'm a Phillies fan of sorts. Congrats to Jamie Moyer, another ex-Cub to win while we continue to suffer.

I'm happy for Philadelphia. I've always had an appreciation for all of Philadelphia's sports teams (except the Flyers, who seem always to favor violence over clean, hard-hitting play), so watching the final out was gratifying. I'm also happy to see the videos of the throngs gathered in the city to celebrate. From what I've read so far, there was little violence and a lot of exuberance. Way to go, Phils!

I was pulling for the Rays but I'm still happy for the Phillies. I'm a fan of Cole Hamels and Chase Utley so it was nice to see them both win a championship. And who couldn't be happy for Jamie Moyer?

I keep seeing these write-ups as if Philadelphia is the most vexed sporting city in the U.S. -- the longest championship drought (25 years) of any city with 4 major sports, a combined 98 seasons of futility across those four sports, etc.

I think that Cleveland has it worse off (even before the Phillies won) -- the Browns have not won an NFL title since 1964 (pre-Superbowl) - for 41 seasons of futility (with a three-year gap when the former Browns moved to Baltimore to become the Ravens), the Indians have not won the World Series since 1948 - for 51 seasons of futility, and the Cavs have never won an NBA title since coming into the league in 1970 - for 38 seasons of futility, for a grand total of 130 championless seasons that puts Philadelphia to shame.

Congrats to the Phillies, though. Well deserved. And congrats to the Rays, as well -- the turnaround there has been pretty amazing.

I offered my congratulations in the rain-out thread, but I'd like to offer them again here. Congratulations to the Phils and especially to their fans.

I'm not happy for the Phillies. I was hoping that Tampa could get all their championships after going through a Philadelphia team. Clearly, I know far too many people from Philly. Still, I'm proud of how well the Rays did this year. And, Hamels is a fantastic player.

The Lions won the Superbowl???

Seriously, congrats to the Phillies. I was pulling for Tampa, as they were an AL team not from Boston or New York, but I have no ill will towards Philly. Enjoy it, fans...

It seems like every year a different recent former Astro or two is going to the World Series. Oh well. Good to see the Phillies win finally.

A tip of the cap to Pat Gillick.

Please come back to Toronto, Pat. Ted can raise my cable/internet/cell bill as high as he wants if he hires you.
